Golden Globes 2025: Shōgun Continues Its Big Night as the Show Wins Best Series and Best Television Female Actor

At this year’s Golden Globes Awards ceremony, Shogun once again demonstrated its value by claiming victory as the Best Drama Series of 2025. The historical fiction series also received numerous additional accolades at this prestigious event.

In addition to the series’ previous victory, its star Anna Sawai, portraying Toda Mariko, was honored with the Best Actress accolade during an event taking place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California.

On January 6, 2025, FX’s captivating show also received other awards besides the ones mentioned. During the ceremony, Hiroyuki Sanada was honored as Best Lead Actor, while Tadanobu Asano took home the prize for Best Supporting Actor.

Sawai was put forward in the category of ‘Best Female Actor in a Television Series – Drama’ alongside Kathy Bates (from Matlock), Emma D’Arcy (of House of the Dragon), and Maya Erskine (in Mr. and Mrs. Smith).

As a devoted follower of cinema, I found myself walking a similar path alongside Keira Knightley and Keri Russell during the Golden Globes Awards. Both of them were nominated within the same category, with Knightley’s exceptional performance in Black Doves and Russell’s impressive portrayal in The Diplomat earning them their respective nominations.

In the category for outstanding television series or drama, Shōgun was nominated alongside The Day of the Jackal, The Diplomat, Slow Horses, the popular Korean series Squid Game on Netflix, and Mr & Mrs Smith. It was Justin Marks, the show’s writer and producer, who accepted the award on stage.

During this time, Hiroyuki Sanada emerged victorious in the Best Male Actor in a television series-drama category. He was recognized among an impressive lineup that included Donald Glover (Mr and Mrs Smith), Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Eddie Redmayne (The Day of the Jackal), and Billy Bob Thornton (Landman).

The Shōgun television series is loosely based on the life story of a real-life English navigator named William Adams. In the show, he is depicted by actor Cosmo Jarvis under the altered character name John Blackthorne.

The show delves into Blackthorne’s journey through feudal Japan, as well as his connection with the lord, Yoshii Toranaga, of the Sanada clan.
