2025 saw a remarkable beginning for Demi Moore, as she was awarded her very first Golden Globe! This exceptional honor came her way due to her outstanding performance as Elizabeth Sparkle in The Substance. She triumphed in the category of Best Actress in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy.
In a moving talk, Moore reminisced about something a producer had shared with her nearly three decades prior.
30 years ago, a producer told me I was like popcorn in the acting world, suggesting my success was limited. At the time, I interpreted this to mean that I could achieve success and earn money from movies but wouldn’t receive recognition. I accepted it as truth and internalized the belief.
Moore also shared that a few years ago, she considered her work complete and wondered if she had fulfilled her purpose. However, an extraordinary, daring, audacious, and utterly outrageous script named “The Substance” mysteriously appeared on her desk. This, she believed, signaled the universe that she still had more to accomplish.
Additionally, during her talk, the actress portraying a ghost expressed, “During instances when we doubt our intelligence, attractiveness, fitness, accomplishments, or essentially feel inadequate in any way.
In my own words, Moore shared that a woman once told her she’d never measure up and always fall short of being “enough.” However, she emphasized that by setting aside the tools used to gauge self-worth, one could truly comprehend their inherent “value.” You can watch her complete speech here.
Following the debut of The Substance, the movie ignited numerous discussions about its central idea. Additionally, the film was directed by Coralie Fargeat and featured an impressive cast that included Margot Robbie, Dennis Quaid, Hugo Diego Garcia, Oscar Lesage, among others.
In the same categories as those nominated were Cynthia Erivo (for Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Zendaya (Challengers), Karla Sofia Gascon (Emilia Perez), and Amy Adams (Nightbitch).
Or, in a more casual tone: Other nominees competing in the same categories were Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Mikey Madison for Anora, Zendaya for Challengers, Karla Sofia Gascon for Emilia Perez, and Amy Adams for Nightbitch.
