Golden Globes 2025: Brady Corbet Wins Best Director For The Brutalist; Send Condolences to Aubrey Plaza Amid Her Husband’s Death

At the Golden Globes 2025, Brady Corbet acknowledges Jeff Baena in a touching tribute upon winning the Best Director award for his film, The Brutalist.

It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Aubrey Plaza’s husband, Jeff Baena, known for his work as a writer and director in independent films like Life After Beth, Joshy, The Little Hours, and others. Tragically, he took his own life on Friday at the age of 47.

At the conclusion of his speech, Corbet expressed his deep sympathy towards the families of Aubrey Plaza and Jeff. He simply stated, “This evening, I share my heart with Aubrey Plaza’s and Jeff’s families.

Besides expressing gratitude to The Brutalist’s team, Corbet also acknowledged and praised the other nominees in the category: Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, Sean Baker for Anora, Edward Berger for Conclave, Coralie Fargeat for The Substance, and Payal Kapadia for All We Imagine as Light.

Corbet expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Golden Globes for boosting the exposure of our movie through their acknowledgment. He mentioned that such recognition is incredibly significant for a film that, just a few short months back, was facing long odds.

He noted, “It’s not only fitting but also humbling to acknowledge that I’m surrounded by such talented filmmakers, whose work I truly respect. Countless dedicated individuals have invested years of their time into making this movie a reality, even before, during, and long after its completion.

In wrapping up his speech, Brady Corbet paid tribute to those he’s sadly parted from – his grandpa, his cherished companion Kevin Turen, and extending sympathies to the families of Jeff Baena and Aubrey Plaza.
