Golden Bachelor’s Gerry Turner Reveals Incurable Cancer Diagnosis; Says It Led to Divorce from Theresa Nist Few Months After Televised Wedding

As a devoted fan who has followed Gerry Turner‘s journey since his days on Golden Bachelor, I must say it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions watching this remarkable man navigate through life’s unexpected twists and turns. His latest announcement about his incurable cancer diagnosis is heart-wrenching, yet it showcases the indomitable spirit that has endeared him to millions worldwide.

Gerry Turner, famously known as Golden Bachelor from the popular ABC series, has disclosed that he’s been diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer. In an interview with People, published on December 11, he opened up about his health situation, admitting he had been reluctant to discuss it earlier. However, he came to understand that speaking out would help dispel a lot of speculation surrounding his absence in February, March, and April.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m here to share some updates. Back in February 2023, Turner tied the knot with Theresa Nist in a televised wedding, following his proposal during the grand finale of Golden Bachelor in November 2023. However, it was unfortunate that they announced their separation just a few months later, in April.

Turner shared that during a recent period when he and Theresa were striving to discover their path and the right place to live, as well as figuring out how to make life work for them, he received some unfortunate news: he had been diagnosed with cancer. He added that this diagnosis followed a visit to an orthopedic surgeon earlier in the year, around three years after sustaining an injury to his shoulder while instructing a pickleball class.

The doctor shared with him that not many treatments were available for his shoulder issue, but certain abnormal blood indicators required more examination. This discovery eventually uncovered that he was suffering from a slow-progressing bone marrow cancer known as Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia.

As per the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the illness is primarily a seldom occurring type of blood cancer that predominantly arises from the bone marrow. This abnormal condition hinders regular blood cell production, potentially causing anemia and a compromised immune response.

As mentioned earlier, there is no cure for the cancer.

Learning the diagnosis felt like 10 tons of concrete dropping on him, Turner said. “I was a bit in denial for a while; I didn’t want to admit to it,” he added.

Turner expressed a desire to devote more time to his two daughters, their partners, and his granddaughters, due to the gravity of his cancer diagnosis. He aimed for his life to carry on as routinely as feasible, understanding that he might not be able to contribute significantly to his new spouse in the same way.

Turner expressed that it’s hoped people will comprehend, looking back, the reasons behind the former couple’s decision to separate following just three months of being married.

Turner stated during his interview with Good Morning America in April that he and Theresa have had many deep conversations about their relationship, and they’ve carefully examined their situation, including their living arrangements. Essentially, they both feel it’s appropriate to end their marriage at this point.

Nist emphasized that numerous individuals shared with her how the dating show had revived their faith in finding love once more at a later stage in life, and she was determined not to let this optimism fade for anyone.

The exes finalized their divorce in June.
