As a longtime enthusiast of both Godzilla and Transformers, I can confidently say that this upcoming collaboration between these iconic franchises is nothing short of a dream come true. Having grown up with both series, I remember fondly the endless hours spent imagining battles between my toy figurines and the epic stories they told.
To mark the 70th anniversary of Godzilla and the 40th anniversary of Transformers, Synergex and Takara Tomy are set to launch figurines featuring Megatron-styled Godzilla and a Laser Optimus Prime in November 2024. These collectibles are inspired by the SS86 Grimlock and Optimus Prime Type MFS-3 Kiryu characters, and they will be available exclusively in Japan.
1. The figure of Megatron, modeled after Godzilla, carries patterns mimicking the Kaiju’s skin and features a blue design reminiscent of a dorsal fin. On the other hand, the Optimus Prime toy has been given a fresh silver coat, emulating the Godzilla combat robot ‘Type 3 Kiryu’ (Mechagodzilla) from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla in appearance.
The prices of these figurines haven’t been disclosed yet, but customers can start pre-ordering them as early as Fall 2024. These eagerly anticipated toys are expected to cause quite a stir among fans. In the show, two Transformers are on a quest to find their corresponding Kaiju/Godzilla counterparts, which is reflected in the design of these figurines. However, they won’t be shipped until summer 2025.
Beyond collectible action figures, each franchise is also developing projects for both the cinema and streaming platforms. For instance, Transformers One, an upcoming animated feature film, is scheduled to debut on September 20, 2024, in the U.S. This film represents the first animated production by the franchise since ‘The Transformers: The Movie’ (1986). Meanwhile, Paramount is working on a collaboration featuring Duke, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, and Destroy, within the realms of Transformers and G.I. Joe.
Currently, the monster universe is buzzing with excitement as a new Godzilla versus Kong movie is being developed. Additionally, Apple TV+ has announced a second season for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, along with other spin-offs. Notably, Guinness World Records acknowledges that the Godzilla film franchise holds the record for longest continuous run, having started back in 1954.
Looking forward to witnessing more team-ups between Godzilla and Transformers, as the collectibles are just the beginning of what could be an exciting series. Maybe a movie featuring Kaiju controlled by Decepticons or even a series where the Transformers attempt to take down the fire-breathing titans. Keep an eye out for future updates from the franchise!
