As a lifelong Godzilla fan, I can’t believe it’s taken this long, but it’s finally happening! For over 70 years, Godzilla has stomped all over movies, TV, comics, and even some really strange old video games. But get this – up until now, the King of the Monsters never had his own roleplaying game! I thought it would never happen, but thankfully, IDW Games is launching a Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game Kickstarter in March 2026. I’m so excited, I can barely contain myself!
A new piece of artwork was released alongside the announcement, depicting Godzilla battling a version of the G-Force team, including the popular robot hero Jet Jaguar. The game also brings together three well-known figures from the Warhammer gaming world – Jervis Johnson, Mark A. Latham, and Gav Thorpe – for their first collaborative tabletop game, Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game. The game challenges players to work together as a team, using character sheets and playing cards, to defend humanity against massive kaiju attacks. Uniquely, the game uses standard 52-card decks instead of dice.
Jervis Johnson (known for Warhammer) was hesitant when IDW first asked him to work on a role-playing game, until he learned it would be based on their Godzilla comics. He immediately signed on! This is Johnson’s first time designing a complete RPG, and he’s enjoyed working with Gav, Mark, and the IDW team. He’s particularly happy with the game system, especially how using cards instead of dice allowed them to create some unique and interesting gameplay mechanics.
Mark A. Latham, co-creator of the upcoming Godzilla RPG, says it’s a dream come true to work on the project, especially because he’s collaborating with Jervis Johnson and Gav Thorpe again. He’s thrilled to have complete creative control over the game system, aiming for a design that perfectly captures the spirit of the G-Force era of Godzilla and emphasizes engaging stories and character development. Latham believes both players and game masters will be pleasantly surprised by the final result.

Having been a roleplaying game enthusiast for over forty years, Gav Thorpe (known for his work on Warhammer and Inquisitor) calls it a real honor to contribute to the world of Godzilla – a character famous around the globe. He enjoyed collaborating with Jervis and Mark to develop ideas for the IDW roleplaying system and the Godzilla game itself. Thorpe notes that it’s rare for a game designer to start with a completely blank slate, and their goal was to create a solid, enjoyable system that builds on existing roleplaying traditions while prioritizing fun, ease of use, and cooperative gameplay.
The Godzilla RPG will be funded through a 30-day Kickstarter campaign starting in early 2026. It will include special, limited-edition pledge levels, and rewards are expected to ship by fall 2026.
