Most Hollywood films premiere worldwide around the same time, but foreign films – like those from Japan – often take months to reach US theaters, or may not even be shown here. This delay can sometimes create anticipation, as seen with Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider a few years ago. However, for highly anticipated movies like Godzilla Minus One, it seems unnecessary to make audiences wait. That’s why Toho and GKIDS are coordinating a near-simultaneous release: November 3, 2026, in Japan and November 6, 2026, in North America.
November 3rd is a key date for Godzilla fans. It’s the anniversary of the original 1954 film’s release. Seventy-two years after Godzilla first appeared on screen, and three years after the hit film Godzilla Minus One (released in Japan on November 3, 2023), Godzilla Minus Zero will continue the monster’s story, debuting on Japan’s Godzilla Day in 2026. For the first time ever, the film will be released in Japan and North America around the same time. Release dates for other countries will be announced later.
Takashi Yamazaki, who won an Oscar for the visual effects in Godzilla Minus One, is returning to write, direct, and handle the VFX for the new film, Godzilla Minus Zero. Yamazaki explains that Minus One represents Japan being at its lowest point after the war, a true ‘zero’ state, and Godzilla pushed it even further – into the ‘minus.’ He playfully points out that mathematically, Godzilla Minus Zero would essentially be the same as just Godzilla, like referring to something that already happened.

GKIDS is excited to release Godzilla Minus Zero in North America, building on the huge success of Godzilla Minus One. According to GKIDS President David Jesteadt, this new film promises to be another landmark moment for the iconic monster, and it’s best enjoyed on the big screen. TOHO has chosen GKIDS to continue bringing Godzilla’s story to audiences.
GKIDS recently worked with Toho to bring a remastered 4K version of Shin Godzilla to theaters. They’re also a leading distributor of anime films, known for events like the annual Ghibli Fest.
