As a seasoned gamer and film enthusiast with a soft spot for Godzilla and Marvel, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that Takashi Yamazaki didn’t join the MCU. The prospect of his unique vision and the monster-filled universe of Marvel was an enticing blend that had my imagination running wild.
The reimagined version of Godzilla, titled “Godzilla Minus One“, has resonated with fans due to its innovative approach, skillfully blending terror and profound emotion in a new take on the iconic monster.
The film’s success, especially as a Japanese production, shows its broad appeal, even in markets dominated by Hollywood. Fans appreciate how it honors Godzilla’s legacy while introducing new ideas, avoiding the common trap of rehashing old material.
It wasn’t surprising when Takashi Yamazaki announced he’s working on a sequel to Godzilla Minus One, and the news was met with excitement. In a recent interview, he revealed he met with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. However, it seems the meeting didn’t lead to Yamazaki joining the MCU. While it would have been a great opportunity for Marvel, it’s unclear if Yamazaki would have been willing to follow Marvel’s creative direction.
When inquired by announcer Shinsuke Kasai, who was clad in a “Operation Kaishin” T-shirt that day, about the popularity of Operation Kaishin among foreigners, he confessed, “‘Indeed, they appear to appreciate the straightforward fighting style.’” He additionally disclosed some intriguing facts, stating, “‘The president of Marvel complimented me, saying, “Wadatsumi!” (laughs). “Wadatsumi, good.”‘
The title “Marvel’s president” generally refers to Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios. During their conversation, Director Takashi Yamazaki mentioned that Feige had expressed interest in a particular project, stating, “We’re constantly holding discussions to see if we can make it a reality.” However, he suspects that this is merely a show of commitment. Additionally, he disclosed that he was presented with an appealing opportunity from abroad but declined it to work on a new Godzilla film. Regrettably, he couldn’t share more information about the specifics.

In the Marvel universe, you’ll find characters influenced by kaiju, such as “The American Giant,” who resembles Godzilla in size and nature. He becomes this colossal being when Todd Ziller undergoes a transformation. This new form grants him immense strength and abilities reminiscent of both the Hulk and Ant-Man.
Although not a main character, he’s battled powerful foes like symbiote dragons. There’s also potential for a Godzilla crossover, something DC has successfully done before.
