Godfall Developer’s Sudden Closure Raises Eyebrows

It appears that the game studio known as Counterplay Games, famous for creating ‘Godfall‘, has reportedly shut down. Based on recent LinkedIn posts, it seems that the closure occurred last month following the end of a collaboration with Jackalyptic Games. An employee stated, ‘Regrettably, we couldn’t carry on our partnership into the new year, and Counterplay Games was disbanded.’

At The Game Awards in 2019, ‘Godfall’ was unveiled as the first game for the PS5. However, when it was released, it didn’t live up to the high anticipation. It currently has a Metacritic score of 61. In our review, we gave it a 5/10, explaining: ‘If all aspects of Godfall were as strong as its engaging combat system, it could have been an excellent PS5 launch game. Regrettably, the only notable feature is that combat system. The loot system lacks significance, the environments are repetitive, and the mission design is frustrating, which makes enjoying the game difficult.’

Afterward, ‘Godfall’ made an appearance on the PS4 platform, causing a slight downgrade in its standing as an exclusive PS5 headliner. Critics found the game’s response to be divided, as certain players appreciated the battle system, whereas others perceived it as monotonous.

The closure of Counterplay Games is just one example in a series of gaming industry shutdowns, with studios like Toadman Interactive (renowned for ‘Immortal: Unchained’) and Freejam (creators of the free-to-play PC game ‘Robocraft’) also reportedly ceasing operations.

These closures underscore the hurdles that medium-sized game creators encounter in a cutthroat market. Despite ‘Godfall’ receiving a grand entrance, enduring success in the gaming world necessitates more than simply creating an initial buzz.

It’s sad when a game development team breaks up, more so when they’ve recently released a game, albeit with its imperfections, which still managed to garner a loyal fanbase. Here’s wishing that everyone impacted by the shutdown finds fresh chances within the gaming industry.
