‘God of War’ Creator Slams TV First Look as “Terrible,” Jokes It Looks Like Kratos is Doing His Business In The Woods

David Jaffe, who created the popular “God of War” video game series, strongly criticized the first official image released for Amazon Prime’s upcoming “God of War” TV show. In a video posted to his YouTube channel on Saturday, Jaffe described the photo as “terrible in many ways.”

The picture features Kratos and his son in a forest setting. David Jaffe, while acknowledging the effort of the show’s creators, expressed his disappointment with the image, calling it “so dumb” despite recognizing everyone is “trying real hard.”

He pointed out that even if something looks bad, it can still be created by talented people. He explained, “It’s possible for two things to be true at once: this image is terrible – and it is, in many ways, which we’ll discuss shortly – and Ron Moore, the showrunner, is incredibly talented. He’s a powerhouse, and I’m confident the show will be good.”

Jaffe explained he wasn’t upset that actor Ryan Hurst didn’t perfectly resemble Kratos. His main issue was with how Kratos looked in the promotional image – specifically, the character’s expression and posture. He described the image as poor and said Kratos simply looked foolish. He questioned why this particular image was chosen to introduce the character to audiences unfamiliar with him, suggesting it wasn’t a strong first impression.

He speculated the pose might have been deliberately chosen to highlight the father-son relationship, but ultimately felt the image wasn’t very strong. He wondered if the creators thought emphasizing anger would turn viewers away, and while acknowledging that might be true, he pointed out the photo simply looked unflattering. He jokingly compared it to someone having an accident in the woods.

Amazon Prime revealed the first image from the series on February 27th. The show stars Christopher Judge as Kratos and his son Atreus will be played by Callum Vinson. Joining them are Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

You can find Jaffe’s complete response on his YouTube channel, where he discusses the image in detail and shares his thoughts on revealing such a well-known character to the public for the very first time.
