GOD OF WAR Creator Rips Apart First Image From Prime Video Series (But Thinks Show Will Rule)

Game creator David Jaffe, known for God of War, recently shared his blunt reaction to the first official image from the upcoming Prime Video series (as reported by Deadline). In a video just under seven minutes long, he didn’t mince words, calling the image “so dumb” and questioning its quality with stronger language. He also criticized the amount of visible makeup on the young actor playing Atreus, and jokingly compared Kratos’s appearance to someone “sing in the woods.”

Jaffe wasn’t against the show itself, just the choice of this particular image to promote it – or even use at all. He clarified this isn’t like George R.R. Martin being upset with House of the Dragon. In fact, Jaffe expressed confidence in showrunner Ron Moore, calling him “awesome,” and believes the show will be good. He’s also optimistic about the actors. However, we think Jaffe might have been more effective by sharing his concerns privately with someone who could address them, rather than publicly airing them. Ultimately, it’s unclear why he chose to speak out this way.

Jaffe wondered why the creators chose this particular image. He believes they might be emphasizing the bond between father and son, rather than a display of intense anger. The story does seem to be heading that way, which is something we appreciate. We recently discovered that Gen Z is looking for more examples of gentle masculinity in media—and less aggression—and we agree with that preference.

What was most striking about Jaffe’s comments wasn’t his criticism itself, but his disinterest in the current God of War games. This might mean he won’t enjoy the upcoming Prime Video series, as it’s based on those same games he doesn’t find appealing.

In any case, this image clearly interested him. Just not in the way he wanted.
