Kratos, the famous god of war, has spent years seeking revenge. Now, this iconic video game character is getting a live-action TV series. The original God of War game first captivated players back in 2005, and the franchise has since become a major force in gaming, filled with compelling characters—many of whom will appear in the upcoming series on Prime Video.
The 2018 reboot of God of War was a huge success for the series, and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök, built on that success. Both games offered a more realistic yet still grand adventure, with richer characters and a more detailed world. The switch from Greek mythology to the stories of Norse gods was well-received, and now it’s the foundation for a new live-action series from Amazon that has recently begun filming.
So, true believers, let’s talk about who you can expect to see when the series officially launches.
Kratos
Kratos, also known as the Ghost of Sparta and son of Zeus, is the central figure of the series. Once defined by his anger and violent tendencies, he was a Spartan commander who made a deal with the god Ares. In exchange for power to defeat his enemies, Kratos sacrificed his soul. Though he became a formidable warrior, this pact brought him little happiness or fulfillment.
Kratos’s resume boasts an impressive record of battle wins, including the complete destruction of Olympus and its unpleasant gods. However, his life has been marked by immense personal loss. He’s suffered deeply, especially after being manipulated by Ares into killing his own wife and child in the first game, leaving him with a painful and haunting past.

Atreus

Atreus, one of Kratos’s sons, is a central character in the story and a popular subject for Father’s Day posts online. He starts out as a contrast to his father’s hardened personality. Because Atreus is innocent and unaware of the world – and his father’s history – his development throughout the story is deeply moving.
What begins as a straightforward plan to scatter his mother’s ashes from the peak of Mount Everest evolves into a deeply moving story about grief, personal transformation, and discovering who we truly are – or who we aspire to be.
Let’s be honest, everyone loves a story about a young person helping someone older rediscover their emotions. You secretly enjoy it too, admit it.

Odin

It’s become common to jokingly diagnose characters with “daddy issues,” but when it comes to the king of Asgard, it’s pretty fitting. He’s definitely not a nice guy. In fact, his over-the-top villainy—from his prejudice against the Frost Giants to the way he treats his son Thor and his general lack of empathy—makes Odin one of the most compelling and ruthless enemies in the God of War series.
It’s hard to imagine a more classic villainous act – and sadly, one that mirrors real-world conflicts – than starting wars across multiple worlds, causing immense death and destruction, all because of a fear of potential future harm. This character’s extreme self-centeredness is truly remarkable; even Doctor Doom would be impressed.

Thor

This Thor isn’t the typical heroic figure many might expect. While incredibly powerful – one of the strongest gods – he primarily acts as Odin’s enforcer, responsible for killing many giants. But their relationship isn’t warm or loving. Thor is actually deeply unhappy and burdened by childhood trauma, particularly a difficult relationship with his father, whom he constantly tries to please.
Look, this guy is incredibly strong, no question. But honestly, he’s got some serious issues going on upstairs, and that makes him a major villain in God of War Ragnarök. I’m really excited to see him and Kratos finally go at it – that fight is going to be epic, and I think it’s what a lot of us are waiting for in the game.

Sif

Sif, the goddess of earth and wife of Thor, plays an important role in God of War Ragnarök. As a mother to Magni and Modi, she’s a more compassionate figure than many Asgardians, and she recognizes the harshness of Odin’s rule. While her family often favors war, Sif prefers to use her intelligence to connect Asgard with the other nine realms, acting as a skilled negotiator and representative.
A key part of the story is her connection with Thor, which is full of emotional ups and downs as she worries Odin has permanently harmed him.

Heimdall

Fans of Marvel might know Heimdall, but the version in Norse mythology is very different from the kind, helpful character seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This Heimdall was a powerful warrior and one of Odin’s sons who played a key role in Asgard’s conquests and attempts to rule all realms. He was also arrogant, believing himself better than others – even his fellow gods. Odin encouraged this attitude by giving him many gifts, including the powerful Hofuð sword.
As a critic, I’ve always found Heimdall fascinating. It’s easy to see why he’s so jaded – the guy can see through lies, and let’s be honest, people lie constantly. I’m really excited to see how they portray his interactions with Kratos and Atreus in the upcoming live-action series; if you’re familiar with the games, I think those scenes will be particularly strong. It’s a dynamic ripe with potential, and I’m hoping the show delivers.

Mimir

It’s interesting how often we see characters in mythology who are cursed or imprisoned by the gods. From Atlas to Medusa, and even Mimir, who’s stuck inside a tree, these figures aren’t exactly happy about their situation – and understandably so! Unlike the friendly tree-like creatures in The Lord of the Rings, they’re usually quite bitter.
So, how did he end up in this mess? It all started with Odin, who punished Mimir because he thought Mimir was loyal to the Jötunn – also known as Giants. These aren’t your average giants, though; they’re massive, and some can even predict the future. You can’t really tell a mythical story without a bit of prophecy, after all.

Brok and Sindri

I’m really excited about the possibility of Brok and Sindri being in the live-action adaptation! They’re more than just the guys who forged Kratos’ amazing axe – it was made in memory of his wife, Faye, and that’s a really powerful connection. They’ve got a whole backstory of family drama too, so I’m hoping the show really explores that. Honestly, they could take their story in so many interesting directions, and I’m eager to see what they do with them. It’s always cool when world-building includes skilled craftspeople like them, and it feels like they’ll be key to bringing the setting to life.
