Glen Powell is partnering with renowned comedy maestro Judd Apatow for an upcoming, yet-to-be-named comedy at Universal. Known for his recent triumphs in Twisters and Hit Man, Powell will not only star in but also co-write the script. Apatow will take charge as director and producer, continuing his long-standing collaboration with the studio.
The movie will focus on a famous country western singer going through a significant downfall. Although the film doesn’t have a name yet, it’s moving quickly towards production at Universal. Powell demonstrates he’s not just a handsome lead actor but also a skilled writer, collaborating in a way reminiscent of his creative collaboration with Richard Linklater on “Hit Man.
Known for popular comedies such as Trainwreck, Knocked Up, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Apatow will bring his unique comic style to this production. He’ll oversee the film’s creation through Apatow Productions, further strengthening his longstanding partnership with Universal that spans nearly two decades.
Under the Barnstorm label they manage, Powell and Dan Cohen are set to create projects as well, having just secured a first-look agreement with the studio. Kevin Misher from Misher Films, another industry veteran at Universal, is joining the production team. Meanwhile, Erik Baiers, Universal’s Executive Vice President of Production Development, will be supervising the project.
This signifies that Powell embarks on his second Universal production following the massive box office earnings of Twisters, totaling approximately $372 million. His future lineup is brimming with projects such as Barry Jenkins’ The Natural Order, Edgar Wright’s adaptation of The Running Man, a venture spearheaded by J.J. Abrams, and the Hulu series Chad Powers.
The forthcoming movie is creating quite a stir due to Powell’s charisma and Apatow’s knack for comedy. As filming progresses, audiences can expect a mix of clever humor and deep emotions – characteristics that are signature to their creative styles.
