Actress Connie Nielsen has been added to the cast of MGM+’s forthcoming Robin Hood series, set to premiere in 2025 after being given the go-ahead in September 2024. The production is currently underway in Serbia. In this role, Nielsen will portray Eleanor of Aquitaine, a historically significant figure renowned for her intelligence and powerful influence.
According to Variety, Michael Wright, who heads MGM+, highly commended Connie Nielsen for her casting in the updated version of Eleanor of Aquitaine’s role. He stated that Connie is an ideal selection, as she possesses a striking gravitas, elegance, and artistic finesse to play this intricate character, a renowned queen and brilliant strategist.
Jocelyn Sabo, who holds the position of executive vice president for scripted television development at Lionsgate, expressed delight about the arrival of talented actress Connie Nielsen into a highly skilled cast. This cast will be instrumental in breathing new life and enhancing the grandeur of this classic tale.
In this new production, Nielsen is set to join forces with Jack Patten, portraying Robin Hood, while Lauren McQueen takes on the role of Maid Marian. The Sheriff of Nottingham will be brought to life by Sean Bean, infusing his trademark intensity into the character.
The story unfolds after the Norman conquest of England, focusing on Rob, the son of a Saxon woodland ranger, and Marian, the daughter of a Norman noble. Their romance blossoms amidst their shared pursuit of justice against governmental misdeeds. Robin Hood serves as their leader in the woods, while Marian uses her courtly influence to shape power from within.
John Glenn and Jonathan English are spearheading the project in roles as both writers and executive producers. Glenn will additionally take on the role of showrunner, with English set to direct the production.
Todd Lieberman from Hidden Pictures is serving as an executive producer for this project, while Carly Elter and Nicole Bryant are in charge of its supervision. The television studio responsible for the series is Lionsgate Television.
As an ardent admirer, I’m well-acquainted with the captivating acting of Nielsen, particularly in iconic films such as Gladiator, Wonder Woman, and One Hour Photo. Not too long ago, she gracefully revisited her role as Lucilla in Gladiator II, and more recently, I had the pleasure of witnessing her stellar performance in Role Play.
She’s been on TV shows such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Following. In the future, you can catch her in Nobody 2 and Tonight at Noon, working alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor in 2024.
