Gladiator II Star Denzel Washington Says He’s NOT A ‘Hollywood Actor’ But THIS Amid Starring in Broadway Revival of Othello

On CBS Sunday Mornings, Denzel Washington shared his preference for being identified as a theater artist instead of a Hollywood actor. During the interview, he explained that while he fits many definitions of an actor, he personally feels more connected to the world of stage performances.

Rather than being a film actor exclusively, he is an artist who performs in theater and movies as well. His recent comments have garnered interest among viewers, while he’s busy with the Broadway reprise of Othello, sharing the stage with Jake Gyllenhaal.

During their chat on the show, the actor clarified his views and remarked, “What exactly constitutes a Hollywood actor? In my opinion, since I hail from Mt. Vernon, I am a ‘Mt. Vernon actor.'” He further explained, “I’m not entirely sure about what ‘Hollywood’ signifies.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of carving out a successful career in the dynamic world of acting. Two of my most cherished accolades are the Academy Awards I received for my performances in the 1989 film Glory and the 2001 movie Training Day. These roles have been truly transformative for me as an artist.

In his continued discussion about his acting career, the former star of The Equalizer explained, “I’m primarily a stage actor who also works in films; it’s not that I started in movies and then moved to the stage.

He asserted, “I debuted on stage initially. I honed my acting skills on the stage, not in films. Films are primarily a director’s domain. Once filmed, you depart, and they edit, add soundtracks, and so forth. On the other hand, the theater is an actor’s realm. The curtain rises; no one can assist you.

In March, Broadway will see the premiere of Othello, a play that has been absent from the stage for forty years. Denzel Washington takes on the leading role of Othello, while Tom Hiddleston portrays his adversary, Iago.
