GLADIATOR II Becomes a Swords and Sandals and Songs Musical on SNL

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for both ancient Rome and musical theater, I must say that the recent “Gladiator Twosuical” sketch on SNL has left me in stitches! The fusion of two seemingly disparate worlds – the gritty sword-and-sandal epic and the song-filled extravaganza – is an absolute delight.

Look at that, it seems like movies are once again thriving. Theaters are breaking records after Thanksgiving with the trio of blockbusters – Wicked, Moana 2, and Gladiator II – leading the way. Interestingly, all three films share a common trait: they’re musicals, though that might not have been the case initially. Paul Mescal, the star of Gladiator II, transformed his sword-and-sandal epic into a musical sequel during his stint on Saturday Night Live.

The “Gladiator Twosuical” trailer on SNL reimagines Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator sequel as a swiftly produced musical aimed at rivaling other blockbuster films. The outcome? Phenomenal! We use the term ‘phenomenal’ not only to describe the hilarity of this pre-recorded skit, but also the quality of the fabricated songs. Given the tight production schedule of less than a week, the songs are remarkably impressive. Furthermore, incorporating a Lin-Manual Miranda rap number, which has become nearly ubiquitous in modern musicals, serves as a clever joke.

Paul Mescal’s genuine singing is just as impressive as the fake music in this sketch. It seems like being an exceptional actor isn’t his only talent – he’s also got some remarkable musical skills! He sings wonderfully, and it feels like he should star in a full-length musical immediately. Not only that, but he can dance too! I bet you didn’t know that sword fighting while maintaining rhythm is challenging, right? Although we haven’t tried, I suppose the answer is “no.

Speaking as a person who wasn’t particularly fond of “Gladiator II,” primarily due to its shift from enjoyable silliness to poorly executed silliness, I must admit that I would have enjoyed a different take on the movie more. This version, however, is deliberately silly in an appealing way.

The movie certainly paved the way for a third part. However, it’s highly unlikely that the plot will transform into a musical sequel titled “Gladiator III“. Despite the improbability, let’s continue nurturing our hope for this imaginative idea since the world of cinema is far from extinction.
