As a dedicated fan who grew up with the iconic Ghostbusters films, I’ve been following the franchise’s developments closely, and my heart skips a beat every time there’s news about a potential new installment. Dan Aykroyd’s comments about the original cast not returning have left me feeling a bit melancholic, but at the same time, I understand his perspective as someone who was part of creating such an enduring legacy.
Dan Aykroyd, a key figure from the original Ghostbusters cast, has voiced his opinions on the possibility of him and Bill Murray returning for additional films within the series. Known for portraying Ray Stantz in the legendary movies, Aykroyd’s most recent appearance was in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Yet, he seems uncertain about reprising his role in potential upcoming projects.
Speaking to the New York Post, Aykroyd stated that he doesn’t foresee the original cast reappearing in the future. “I don’t think it’s likely,” he said, emphasizing that the franchise has moved on to a new group of characters and innovative concepts to propel its continuation. “There’s an entirely new ensemble, along with fresh concepts,” Aykroyd explained further. He also expressed his approval for this progression, stating, “It should be developed past the originals.
Although Aykroyd suggests handing over the Ghostbusters mantle, his fellow actor Ernie Hudson, portraying Winston Zeddemore, remains open to future opportunities. In fact, earlier this year, Hudson expressed his readiness for more Ghostbusters ventures to GamesRadar+, stating, “I haven’t received any information [about a sequel], but I’m usually the last one to know.” He underscored his eagerness for delving into fresh tales and pointed out, “There’s an audience for it. Let’s elevate it to a new height.
In an intriguing development, director of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Gil Kenan, hinted at possible future narratives for the series. He expressed a keen interest in broadening the Ghostbusters universe beyond New York City. During an interview with GamesRadar+, Kenan discussed the potential for exploring other parts of the globe and delving into the depths of ancient ghost-busting folklore. “I’m eager for more Ghostbusters tales to branch out in all directions,” he stated. Kenan also proposed the idea that supernatural dangers and ghost-busting squads could have existed prior to the original 1984 team, suggesting a rich history yet to be explored.
It appears that future Ghostbusters movies might explore uncharted grounds yet remain true to the roots of the initial series. Regardless of whether the original actors reappear, viewers can anticipate innovative concepts and more expansive storylines.
