What separates a good anime from a truly great one? It often comes down to a captivating story, beautiful animation, and a satisfying emotional or thematic resolution. Ghost in the Shell is a prime example of a series that has consistently delivered on all fronts. And now, fans have something new to look forward to! Prime Video announced on Thursday that a brand new Ghost in the Shell anime series, also titled The Ghost in the Shell, is coming to the streaming platform.
The announcement was made at Prime Video’s first international content event in London. It’s part of Prime’s plan for Asian shows and movies coming in 2026. In addition to the new cyberpunk series, Prime revealed several other titles debuting this year, including the Korean drama Human x Gumiho (currently in development), a supernatural romance with Jun Ji-hyun and Ji Chang Wook, and a film produced by Alia Bhatt.
Fans can stream the new animated series, The Ghost in the Shell, on Prime Video starting this July. The series is being produced by Science SARU, the studio known for Inu-oh and Dandadan. The Ghost in the Shell is a highly respected and impactful franchise that takes place in a futuristic, tech-driven city in 2029. This new Prime Video adaptation features a fresh visual style, drawing inspiration from the original manga rather than the well-known 1995 film.
The popular Ghost in the Shell series started as a manga by Shirow Masamune in 1989. It has since grown into a major franchise with anime, movies, and video games. With the exception of the 2017 film starring Scarlett Johansson, which wasn’t a success, Ghost in the Shell remains a key part of the cyberpunk genre.
It’s been a while since a new series of Ghost in the Shell aired, following the run of Netflix’s Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 from 2020-2022 (which wasn’t as successful as the 2017 film). Now, with Science SARU leading the newest reboot, fans have a lot to be excited about. The new Ghost in the Shell series will stream globally on Prime Video in July 2026.
