Last week, author George R.R. Martin teased his “Not a Blog” followers by suggesting that he plans to soon express his views on all the issues surrounding the show “House of the Dragon”
Even though the day hasn’t yet arrived, the TV show’s writer and executive producer has already shared his thoughts about a specific character who’s absent in the HBO version, hinting at potential implications for seasons 3 and 4
On Wednesday, Martin, jointly credited as a co-creator of House of the Dragon alongside showrunner and writer Ryan Condal, posted an article called “Beware the Butterflies.” However, he quickly removed it from public view afterwards
Despite Martin commending the episode for its strong writing, competent direction, and impactful acting, he conceded that the portrayal by Blood and Cheese fell short for some fans, disappointing them
I firmly believe that the on-screen portrayals of Sam C. Wilson’s and Mark Stobbart’s characters in House of the Dragon are more ruthless than their counterparts in George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire and Blood. This assertion stems from the stark difference in how Maelor Targaryen, the third child of Queen Helaena (Phia Saban), meets his end in the series compared to the book. In the book, this storyline presented a poignant “Sofie’s choice” dilemma, which has been eliminated from the show’s narrative, making it more brutal and less morally complex
Martin expressed that he continues to appreciate the episode and the ‘Blood and Cheese’ sequence in particular. While eliminating the ‘Helaena’s Choice’ moment made the scene less impactful, it didn’t diminish it drastically. However, he emphasizes more on the potential long-term consequences for the series by exploring how the character’s demise could influence the storyline’s unfolding in the future
The writer emphasizes that although Maelor is only two years old in Fire and Blood, much like a butterfly, his influence on the narrative surpasses expectations given his size. To ensure their safety, Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower assigns Ser Willis Fell to escort Princess Jaehaera to Storm’s End, and Ser Rickard Thorne to transport Prince Maelor towards the Hightower army moving towards King’s Landing. Tragically, a mob tries to claim the bounty offered by Rhaenyra for Maelor’s safe return, leading to the death of both Ser Rickard and Prince Maelor in a tavern. This event unfolds as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy) takes control over King’s Landing on House of the Dragon
Martin suggested that since Ryan’s plans are uncertain, and considering Maelor was absent in season 2 episode 2, it might be best to eliminate his character altogether. This would also involve removing the scene where Alicent attempts to send the children to safety, as well as potentially sending Rickard Thorne with Willis Fell. This way, Jaehaera would have two guards remaining
He says that it appears that Ryan is acting in this manner. It’s simpler, and it might make sense in terms of spending plans and filming schedules. However, he says simpler is not better.
