George R. R. Martin Wants Us to Know “Everything That Went Wrong” With ‘House of the Dragon’ in a Cryptic Blog Post

As a seasoned gamer and a devoted fan of George R.R. Martin’s intricate world, I must admit that House of the Dragon’s second season left me feeling like a maester lost in the labyrinth of Oldtown. While the initial episodes were promising, the latter half seemed to drag on like Mormont’s long night.

The second season of ‘House of the Dragon’ has just premiered, and it’s been receiving positive feedback along with strong viewership numbers. However, some fans have pointed out that they feel the storyline isn’t quite as compelling as before.

The beginning of the season was promising, even though a significant scene from the book, featuring Blood and Cheese, suffered a major mishap. However, this error was swiftly rectified by Rhaenys’ death, which left many viewers surprised.

After that, it seemed nothing significant occurred for the remainder of the season, leading many viewers to remark that the final episode felt more like a teaser for season 3. Although much was discussed about the impending war, in reality, not many major events took place to advance the conflict. Additionally, there have been conversations suggesting the show is gradually moving towards a more progressive theme. This is particularly noticeable with the unexpected kiss between Mysaria and Rhaenyra, as well as the representation of Sharako Lohar. Some dialogue in the season finale was also deemed absurd by fans, along with certain comments made by the cast and crew, according to observations shared online.

1. Readers perceived that sexism was overemphasized as a central theme, but it was presented in an insincere and low-quality manner. Additionally, there’s been a tendency to portray Rhaenyra as the heroic figure among the two contenders, yet she wasn’t, as George R.R. Martin’s world is filled with characters who are deeply flawed.

Nevertheless, based on fan responses, the season didn’t live up to its potential, a sentiment echoed by George R.R. Martin himself in his recent blog update. He subtly teased upcoming events without giving too much away by discussing his vacation first.

Although I’m not eager to pen more posts regarding the issues faced by HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, it’s a task I must undertake nonetheless. For now, let’s set that aside and focus on today’s celebration – Zozobra’s day, a time for us to cast away our worries and embrace joy.

This does not sound positive at all. Or at least, there’s no possible way to frame it in a positive light. While most of the issues I pointed out above are truly the crew’s problem, the biggest issue – the pacing, is something that I’m not sure I can hold against them. The show is after all, based on the book ‘Fire & Blood,’ and the book doesn’t deal with Dance of the Dragons.

The book outlines the entire chronicle of the Targaryen Dynasty from Aegon’s arrival in Westeros up until their presumed downfall, yet only around 50 pages cover the storyline that ‘House of the Dragon’ aims to expand over multiple seasons, each consisting of approximately 8-hour-long episodes.
