At New York Comic Con this year, George R.R. Martin discussed the progress of his highly anticipated next novel, *The Winds of Winter*, which is part of the *A Song of Ice and Fire* series.
It’s been almost 15 years since the last book in the series, ‘A Dance with Dragons,’ came out in 2011, and fans are understandably frustrated with the long wait for the next installment.
George R.R. Martin started his epic series, A Song of Ice and Fire, with the novel *A Game of Thrones* in 1996. He continued the series with *A Clash of Kings* (1998), *A Storm of Swords* (2000), *A Feast for Crows* (2005), and *A Dance with Dragons* (2011).
As a huge fan of the *A Song of Ice and Fire* series, I, like many others, was really anticipating *The Winds of Winter*. It was supposed to come out pretty quickly after the last book, but George R.R. Martin is still working on the final 200-300 pages. Honestly, it’s frustrating to see the series stuck, and a lot of us feel like he’s focusing more on other projects than finishing the story we’ve all been waiting so long for.
Martin responded to the complaints about the delay of *Winds of Winter*, explaining that he’s historically struggled with meeting deadlines. He expressed his discomfort with breaking agreements or missing them.
He shared why fans often get upset when he takes on projects besides *Winds of Winter*. He explained that whenever he announces a new work, a lot of people online complain, asking why he isn’t finishing the next book in the *A Song of Ice and Fire* series. He pointed out that he actually wrote this other material years ago, in 1993, and simply sold it when the opportunity arose. While he still cares deeply about *Winds of Winter* and continues to work on it, he also genuinely enjoys these other creative endeavors.
People are mostly upset because they’ve been waiting for so long and feel like Martin hasn’t been fully focused on this project.
Readers are eager for the next book and want to know when it will be finished. Many are frustrated that the author is working on other things instead of completing the long-awaited installment.
Despite working on other projects, Martin wants to assure his readers that he’s still dedicated to completing ‘The Winds of Winter.’ He understands the wait has been lengthy, but he’s determined to finish the book and share it with his fans when it reaches the quality he expects.
