George R.R. Martin Says THE WINDS OF WINTER ‘Still a Priority’

As a devoted fan of George R.R. Martin and his masterpiece, A Song of Ice and Fire, I find myself in a peculiar predicament – eagerly awaiting the long-awaited sixth book, The Winds of Winter, yet simultaneously understanding the challenges that come with such an intricate and expansive narrative.

The much-anticipated book “The Winds of Winter,” the sixth installment in the series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” is now 13 years late (and still counting). Rest assured, even though some impatient readers may feel otherwise, George R.R. Martin himself is very much aware of this delay. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin admitted that he too finds it hard to believe that the book is taking so long to complete. However, fans should not lose hope for the book or its author as Martin considers “The Winds of Winter” as a top priority, despite his other literary and TV projects. Regrettably, Martin can’t promise that those doubting him won’t eventually be proven right.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Lily Ford from THR about the short films I’m backing, inspired by the works of my late friend Howard Waldrop. Towards the end of our conversation, Lily brought up the much-anticipated/perplexing unfinished novel, The Winds of Winter. She referred to it as the “long-awaited sixth and final book” from A Song of Ice and Fire. This could be a slip-up or the most exciting literary reveal of the year, for what makes The Winds so confounding is that it’s not actually the last book I have planned. Instead, the conclusion for A Song of Ice and Fire is a seventh installment, A Dream of Spring.

Regarding the overdue sixth book, I’m painfully conscious of the delay. ‘Alas,’ I find myself saying, ‘I’ve been 13 long years in the making.’ Each passing day, I can’t help but wonder, ‘How did it take me 13 years?’ It’s just one day at a time.

Same, George. Same.

Contrary to what some may think or even joke about, I, as a dedicated fan of Martin’s work, am confident that he still holds the belief that he will finish his upcoming novel – a project he considers crucial. However, he can’t promise that those who doubt him won’t ultimately prove correct. Martin expressed this with a touch of humor, saying, “Many are already penning my obituaries, claiming ‘He’ll never complete it.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. But for now, I’m very much alive and seem to be thriving!

And since he also said he’s not the retiring type and doesn’t golf, what else would he do?

Write a little faster, we hope.
