George R.R. Martin Praises ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’

George R.R. Martin recently expressed his enthusiasm about the forthcoming HBO series titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“. This show, which has completed its first season and entered post-production, is adapted from Martin’s novella, “The Tales of Dunk and Egg“, specifically the story called “The Hedge Knight“.

After watching all six episodes, including the last two which were still rough cuts, I must say that I was extremely satisfied with the final result: “I’ve watched all six of them now, even though the last two weren’t fully polished, and I absolutely loved them.

The series primarily revolves around Dunk and Egg, two characters Martin adores, skillfully brought to screen by remarkable actors. He also lauded the entire ensemble, expressing, “I’ve always cherished Dunk and Egg, and the performers we selected to embody them are simply outstanding. The rest of the cast is equally impressive. Prepare yourselves for the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.

Fans of the novellas will be pleased to know the adaptation stays true to the story.

Martin underscored that the narrative of this series deviates from typical dragon-centric or battle-heavy themes. Instead, it delves deeply into the characters, examining concepts such as loyalty, ethics, and the essence of chivalry. He emphasized that while there’s a significant action sequence, it lacks dragons in this installment, as well as grand battles and white walkers. The primary focus here is on character development, with an emphasis on duty, honor, and the ideals of chivalry.

During the intense battle sequence, those expecting continuous action or recurring supernatural aspects such as white walkers might want to modify their anticipations accordingly.

Initially appearing in the anthology “Legends,” edited by Robert Silverberg, George R.R. Martin’s short story, “The Hedge Knight,” experienced widespread acclaim and served as a catalyst for attracting new readers to his expansive Westeros series. At that time, Martin acknowledged the significant contributions of Robert Silverberg, Anne Groell, and the indelible characters from the narrative in expanding his reader base.

The series is planned to start airing towards the end of this year, but there’s no specific date given yet: “The program is set to launch late in the year, I’ve been informed. Exactly when, I can’t tell you. It might be in the fall.” HBO has additionally unveiled fresh teaser trailers to whet viewers’ appetites for what’s coming up.
