For over five decades, San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has expanded into the premier event for genre news. Each year, countless enthusiasts and aficionados flock to California to cram into panels and witness their beloved creators and celebrities on stage. From significant events like Robert Downey Jr.’s unveiling as Doctor Doom to lesser-known attractions such as the merchandise areas and social gatherings, SDCC is an unmissable destination. Contrary to popular belief, not every notable figure in the genre realm has graced this major convention. In fact, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, is making his debut at San Diego Comic-Con.
It’s quite remarkable that the first Star Wars panel made its way to the convention all the way back in 1976 – a full year before the film revolutionized pop culture. Since then, numerous actors and executives from the Star Wars universe have graced this massive event. And now, after years of declining invitations, George Lucas himself will be present as a panelist at SDCC.
Which Panel Will George Lucas Be in at SDCC and What Time Is It?
In simpler terms, Guillermo del Toro and Doug Chiang, known for their work in storyboarding and designing for “Star Wars” prequels, will join George Lucas in a panel discussion. This panel, which takes place on Sunday in Hall H, will focus on the impact of illustrated stories and provide a sneak peek at the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The museum is set to open in 2026.
David Glanzer, the chief communications and strategy officer of Comic-Con, expressed immense excitement, saying, “We’re absolutely delighted to have George Lucas join us at Comic-Con for the first time.” About half a century ago, Star Wars debuted one of its initial public showings at our convention, alongside a booth displaying Howard Chaykin’s now iconic Star Wars poster as a promotional item.
It’s truly remarkable that Mr. Lucas is making a comeback, this time unveiling the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. This brings us full circle, as his lifelong passion for visual storytelling and creating immersive worlds aligns perfectly with our values and those of our community. The museum’s goal to honor narrative art in every form mirrors what Comic-Con has been advocating since its inception.
