After almost ten years of planning, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will finally open to the public on September 22, 2026. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the museum will showcase art that tells stories through various mediums, including ancient cave paintings, comic books, and film & television. A large portion of the exhibits will come from the extensive collection George Lucas has built up over many years.
Melody Hobson, co-founder of the Lucas Museum and wife of George Lucas, explained that the museum will showcase art “of the people,” reflecting everyday beliefs and therefore belonging to everyone. George Lucas added that stories are essentially modern mythology, and visual depictions of these stories help us make sense of life’s big questions.
The new Lucas Museum in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park is almost finished. Its unique, spaceship-like building will house 35 galleries across 100,000 square feet, each focused on different aspects of human life like love, family, and work. The museum will display a permanent collection of over 40,000 items. Construction, which cost over a billion dollars and was delayed by the pandemic and other issues, is now nearing completion.
As you’d expect from a museum created by George Lucas, there will be Star Wars artwork and props, but they won’t be the main attraction. Lucas and director Guillermo del Toro recently gave fans a sneak peek at the museum during Comic-Con in San Diego, with Queen Latifah narrating the presentation. Later, at New York Comic Con in October, Lucas joined a panel discussion led by Martin Scorsese, alongside renowned fantasy artists Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell. The museum will also showcase a famous 1970 cover for A Princess of Mars by Frank Frazetta, a contemporary of Vallejo’s in the fantasy art world.
