George Lucas’ Abandoned STAR WARS Series Cost $40 Million an Episode and Would’ve ‘Blown Up’ Franchise

In a short while, Andor season 2 will grace Disney+ screens. If its quality matches that of season 1, it will undoubtedly be a worthwhile investment. Given the considerable budget Lucasfilm invested in producing this show, one would expect nothing less. It’s fascinating to consider how much a TV series can cost – it’s quite expensive to bring the distant galaxy to our screens, a lesson even George Lucas learned. Before Disney acquired the company, Lucas had planned a live-action Star Wars TV series that would have cost around $40 million per episode. Such an exorbitant price tag, as one producer noted, could have potentially jeopardized the entire franchise. Here’s what we know about George Lucas’ unrealized Star Wars TV series.

Rick McCallum, a former Lucasfilm producer working under George Lucas, made an appearance on the “Young Indy Chronicles” podcast (as reported by Variety). In this conversation, he shared insights into Lucas’ plans for the first live-action television series in the Star Wars franchise, titled “Star Wars: Underworld.” This series was to be set between the prequel and original trilogies, but what was previously unknown is that it could have potentially closed the door on the entire Star Wars saga.

McCallum indicates they were deeply immersed in the development of the Star Wars series by George Lucas, boasting approximately 60 scripts penned by some of the world’s finest writers, with each script having undergone multiple revisions. He further characterizes them as dark, sensual, and violent. He also emphasized that these were truly exceptional, intricate, thought-provoking scripts. In essence, McCallum suggests that Lucas’ Star Wars show promises to be outstanding.

It seems that the unrealized Star Wars series, which McCallum referred to as one of his greatest disappointments, encountered significant issues. According to McCallum, each episode of Lucas’ proposed Star Wars show was intended to be more expansive than the films themselves. However, with the technology available at the time, he couldn’t keep the cost per episode below $40 million. This would have meant a total cost of $2.4 billion for 60 episodes, which was simply too expensive. And this was back in the past, about 15 years ago. Wow.

It’s no surprise that McCallum commented “Underworld” could have destroyed the entire “Star Wars” universe, as Disney surely would not have acquired George Lucas’ franchise if they had offered it for sale. In the end, Disney purchased the entirety of Lucasfilm for a total of $4.05 billion.

George Lucas’ proposed “Star Wars: Underworld” might have become one of history’s most remarkable TV series, but its potential cost seems unjustifiable for any show. No series could match that expense. However, we remain open to revising our opinion once we watch season 2 of “Andor”.
