In a recent Variety interview, George Clooney discussed his former friendship with Donald Trump and how it evolved over the years.
Before George Clooney became famous, his father, a journalist, taught him valuable lessons about what’s right and wrong. This early influence led to Clooney’s passion for media and getting involved in public issues, eventually inspiring his film Good Night, and Good Luck, which tells the story of how CBS News challenged Joseph McCarthy.
Clooney frequently draws parallels between the story and current events, such as the way the media covered the period before the Iraq War.
Reflecting on the experience now, Clooney notes it feels different given the political climate under Trump. When he played Edward Murrow last spring, CBS News was simultaneously navigating a legal battle with Trump as they sought approval for Skydance to acquire Paramount.
Clooney was upset that CBS and ABC both chose to settle lawsuits instead of fighting them in court. He believes that if they had taken a stronger stance and contested the claims, the current media landscape would be different. “That’s just the reality,” he stated.
George Clooney shared an interesting story about his past relationship with Donald Trump. He said they used to be friendly, recalling that Trump would call him often and even once tried to help him get an appointment with a back surgeon. Clooney remembers seeing Trump around town at clubs and restaurants, describing him as a bit of a goofball – though he notes that things have changed since then.
George Clooney has consistently spoken out on political issues. In 2024, he gained attention for an opinion piece in The New York Times where he suggested President Biden should withdraw from the presidential race following a disappointing debate. While some Democrats praised his honesty, the Biden family accused Clooney of disloyalty.
