Genshin Impact’s latest story teaser fuels theory on Paimon’s real identity

HoYoverse has yet again surprised fans of Genshin Impact with an unexpected reveal, this time on a typical Wednesday, in the form of the latest installment of the Teyvat Chapter Interlude Teaser, titled “The Gods’ Boundaries“.

In the eight-minute animation, we finally get to meet three of Teyvat’s four Shades in person:

  • Ronova, the Ruler of Death
  • Istaroth, the Ruler of Time
  • Naberius, the Ruler of Life

Naberius’ circumstances have become somewhat intricate due to the fact that Rhinedottir, one of the five Sinners, has seized control from her. Despite this takeover, Rhinedottir shares Naberius’ body and powers while also maintaining her own consciousness, allowing for communication between them. It’s quite a whirlwind for Rhinedottir, being a Sinner, a member of the Hexenzirkel, and now possessing the essence of a Shade.

The trailer reveals that the fourth Shade, named Asmoday – the Dominant of Space, was the one who initially crossed paths with the Traveler and their sibling in the game, leading to their separation. Additionally, it’s mentioned that Asmoday is currently missing, and even her associates are uncertain about her whereabouts.

Discussion during the leaders’ gathering has sparked a widely-held assumption concerning Asmoday and the faithful associate of the Traveler, Paimon — specifically, that Paimon is actually Asmoday himself. The trio of Spirits ponder whether Asmoday might have defected to the other side.

“It’s unthinkable,” Ronova says. “Unless… she loves her new master more than her own self.”

Over time, there have been numerous occasions when Paimon’s behavior seemed questionable, adding to this suspicion her distinctive appearance and striking resemblance to Asmoday’s design. This has led many to speculate that Paimon could be the Shade herself. This line of thought is supported by the above observation.

The second half of the trailer spotlights Pierro, leader of the Fatui Harbingers, and the impending region, Nod-Krai. It discloses that Pierro observed Ronova enchanting the Eternal Curse upon the remaining Khaenri’ahns. With the Cryo Archon’s intentions in mind, he is now ready to make any sacrifice necessary to dethrone the gods. (In a casual comment, the Shades had dismissed the Archon’s powers as insignificant.)

It seems that Pierro is currently in Nod-Krai, as he delivers his speech, and it turns out that this area is bustling with Fatui activity due to a missing Harbinger named Columbina. Whether she’s in trouble or simply avoiding her own people, the Fatui are working diligently to locate her.
