Genre Scores Big With 2026 Oscar Nominations, Thanks SINNERS and FRANKENSTEIN

This year, Sinners received an incredible 16 Oscar nominations, more than any other film. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein also performed very well, earning nine nominations – the third highest total. It came in just behind Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which received 13 nominations.

One of the year’s most memorable films, Bugonia, was also quite unusual, but it still earned four nominations at the 2026 Oscars. KPop Demon Hunters is also in the running with two nominations, competing with the hit sequel Zootopia 2 for Best Animated Feature. Jurassic World Rebirth, featuring prehistoric monsters, could win the Visual Effects Oscar, but it’s up against the Na’vi from Avatar: Fire and Ash, which received two nominations. For those who enjoy sports movies, F1 is also being celebrated with four nominations, including a bid for the top prize, Best Picture. Finally, we’re thrilled that Weapons, another favorite of ours, has a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

While Sinners likely won’t be shut out at the Oscars, it’s clear that genre films will be recognized this year. Now that all the nominees are announced, the big questions are: how much success will Sinners achieve, and how many other genre movies will also win awards? We’re hoping for a delightfully spooky outcome.

Okay, so I’m seeing the cast list for this new project, and it’s pretty amazing. Benicio Del Toro is in something called One Battle After Another, and so is Sean Penn, which is cool. Jacob Elordi is tackling Frankenstein – that’s a bold choice! Delroy Lindo’s doing Sinners, and Stellan Skarsgård is in a film titled Sentimental Value. Honestly, the range of these titles and actors has me really intrigued.
