Back in 2016, test footage for a raunchy Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds leaked online. This leak may have been the key to getting the film made. Years later, Reynolds revealed he was the one who released it, hoping to convince 20th Century Fox to move forward with the project. Now, renowned animator Genndy Tartakovsky is taking a similar approach, but he’s being upfront about it. He’s shared a concept reel for an adult animated action movie he’s been developing for six years – a project called The Black Knight – because, surprisingly, no studio has been willing to take it on.
In a last-ditch effort to generate excitement for his new movie, the creator of beloved shows like Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory shared a preview of The Black Knight on social media. So far, every studio-including Sony, which recently practically gave away the incredibly profitable K-Pop Demon Hunters-has declined to pick it up. However, after watching this footage, it’s difficult to see why. It’s both visually stunning and thrilling.
The idea behind it is also really engaging. Though the concept of a huge knight battling a ninja suggests the plot, Tartakovsky prefers not to reveal too much detail as he’s still planning to develop it further. However, he did share that “our Knight Armor is 20 feet high and controlled by a knight inside using ropes, pulleys, and levers. The setting is around the 14th century.”
A grown-up animated series set in the past, featuring a massive robot knight? And it’s created by Genndy Tartakovsky? He’s so passionate about this project that he shared a preview with fans, even knowing it could jeopardize the whole thing? Count us in.
Hopefully Tartakovsky’s very public ploy works as well as Ryan Reynolds’ secret one did.
