As a die-hard fan of General Hospital and Kelly Monaco for more than two decades, I can say that her departure after 21 years is like losing a beloved family member. It feels like we’re saying goodbye to Sam McCall herself!
For nearly two and a half decades, Kelly Monaco has been a fixture on General Hospital, the ABC daytime soap. Now, it seems she’s preparing to say goodbye after 21 years. The news of her departure was initially reported by Soap Opera Network.
The actress who is widely recognized for her portrayal of Sam McCall will bid farewell to ABC’s daytime drama series this autumn. Monaco initially joined General Hospital in 2003, following on from where she left off in the discontinued soap opera Port Charles, where she played Livvie Locke from 2000 until 2003.
When Monaco came aboard General Hospital, her character, Sam McCall, entered as a swindler with a troubled history, attempting to break the curse of misfortune that plagued her family. Sam’s character was deeply interwoven in the soap opera’s intricate plotline. It was revealed that she was the biological child of mob boss Julian Jerome and lawyer Alexis Davis. Additionally, she was adopted by Cody McCall and Evelyn Bass, adding layers to an already captivating narrative.
To this point, Monaco has recorded approximately 2,200 episodes, which has solidified her position as one of daytime television’s most adored figures. Her performances garnered her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 2006 for her portrayal of Samantha McCall; this recognition was a testament to the captivating way she breathed life into this character.
2020 saw an unexpected change when Lindsay Hartley temporarily replaced Monaco as Sam McCall, during her short break. Hartley performed admirably in this role, prompting the writers to bring her back for multiple episodes this year, showcasing that she could convincingly portray such a character distinctively associated with Monaco’s performance as Sam McCall.
Monaco’s exit comes a little less than a month after the returns of some old faces to General Hospital. Jonathan Jackson as Lucky Spencer, who checked back into the long-running soap opera on Friday. Rick Hearst also returned as Ric Lansing.
While Monaco’s exit surely ends an era in the General Hospital’s history, this at the same time will open the door for newer plotlines and character development. No matter what, Monaco’s legacy in the show will always be significant.
