Tristan Rogers, renowned for his role as Robert Scorpio in the soap opera General Hospital, tragically passed away at the age of 79. His manager, Meryl Soodak, verified to People magazine that Rogers succumbed to lung cancer on Friday, August 15th.
Rogers received his diagnosis in July, mere weeks before he passed away. What added to the surprise for his admirers, who recognized him for maintaining a wholesome lifestyle, was that he had never been a smoker. Regrettably, the illness progressed at an alarming pace, and over the course of a single month, his health deteriorated significantly.
In 1980, an Australian actor initially appeared on the set of General Hospital for a single-day role. However, things quickly took a different turn when his character, Robert Scorpio (a spy), resonated deeply with the audience. His presence expanded significantly, and he became central to many of the show’s plots, such as the highly acclaimed 1981 wedding between Luke and Laura, which still holds the record for one of the most-watched daytime episodes ever broadcast.
Over the span of my career, I’ve graced the screen in over a thousand episodes of that beloved series. Even after my character took a bow in 1992, I found myself reprising my role on occasion, such as during the spin-off “General Hospital: Night Shift.” My final performances were a fitting finale to an illustrious chapter in soap opera history, before life took an unexpected turn with my diagnosis.
Rogers’ professional journey extended well beyond Port Charles, encompassing various roles. As reported by Fox News, he also starred on The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. Some may recall his voice as Jake the kangaroo from Disney’s The Rescuers Down Under. Additionally, Rogers won a Daytime Emmy for his role in Studio City and received another nomination for his work in The Bay.

Following the announcement of his death, an outpouring of tributes came in from friends, colleagues, and fans. Genie Francis, who portrayed Laura Spencer, expressed her feelings saying, “My heart is filled with sadness. Farewell, my extraordinary friend. Tristan Rogers was a truly radiant individual, both on screen and off.
Emma Samms, who played the role of Holly Sutton opposite him, expressed her fondness for working alongside him and will deeply miss him.

Frank Valentini, the executive producer of General Hospital, expressed his sorrow as well: ‘We’re all deeply affected. The absence of both General Hospital and Robert Scorpio will leave a significant gap in Port Charles.’
As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but flood social media with nostalgic moments and iconic scenes from Rogers’ illustrious career in soap operas. It’s hard to believe that the man who captured our hearts and defined drama on screen is no longer with us. Yet, his legacy lives on as a true icon of the genre.
