Fresh details have emerged regarding the unfortunate demise of movie icon Gene Hackman, aged 95, along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, and their dog Zinna. Notably, the significant role that their surviving canine companions played in guiding first responders to Gene’s location is being highlighted.
Approximately a week before Gene’s passing, health officials confirmed that Betsy had tragically passed away due to hantavirus, a rare disease linked to rodent waste. It was around the same time that Gene, who was battling advanced Alzheimer’s, may have been living with his wife’s remains for several days. The unfortunate event occurred on February 26 inside their home in Santa Fe, where both individuals were discovered deceased.
According to USA Today, Betsy was found unconscious near a space heater with spilled pills in a bathroom. Initial responders found Betsy’s body, but after a 30-minute search of the house, they couldn’t locate Gene.
As an over-the-moon fanatic, the pivotal moment came when the two canine survivors, Bear and Nikita, were relentlessly barking and leading the way for first responders to the back of the house. Intrigued by their determined guidance, the team trailed behind them and uncovered the tragic sight of Gene in the mudroom.
Fire Chief Brian Moya shared that they understood the dog was attempting to signal, “Come here! Come here!” in a friendly manner.
It was confirmed by New Mexico’s top medical examiner that Gene’s pacemaker last functioned on February 17, suggesting he passed away shortly thereafter. The investigators noted signs of rodent infestation in the property’s exterior structures, but deemed the risk to the main house as minimal.
In an Instagram video, Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming Willis chose to address the heartbreaking double loss, stating, “I usually don’t comment on such matters, but I firmly believe that there is valuable insight to be gained from this story concerning the unfortunate demise of Mr. and Mrs. Hackman.
I understand the importance of acknowledging that those who care for others also require care themselves. They are indispensable, and it’s crucial that we reciprocate by being there for them, so they can continue providing care without interruption for their loved ones.
It’s said that both Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were deeply affectionate towards their canine companions. As reported by People magazine, following the unfortunate passing of the couple, their beloved pets have been taken care of at a nearby pet daycare center.
