Gene Hackman’s Death: How Did His Dog Die? Autopsy Reports Show Signs of Starvation and Dehydration

The deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa sparked widespread astonishment in Hollywood and beyond. Recently, an autopsy report on their deceased dog, who also passed away with them, has surfaced.

As reported by The Associated Press, tragically, the couple’s beloved dog, Zinna, passed away in February due to lack of food and water.

During the examination performed at the state’s agricultural vet lab, it was suggested that some degree of mummification might have concealed internal alterations in Zinna. Despite this, there was no evidence of poisoning, illness, or injury leading to Zinna’s demise.

The state’s agricultural department’s vet laboratory found that the dog’s stomach had minimal quantities of hair and bile.

Among the trio of dogs they owned, Zinna – a kelpie crossbreed – was one of them. Tragically, her lifeless body was uncovered in a dog crate, hidden within the very same bathroom closet where Betsy Arakawa was later discovered.

Luckily, not only did the other two dogs make it through, but they also assisted the first responders in finding the location of Gene Hackman’s body.

As reported by Fire Chief Brian Moya to USA Today, it took first responders around half an hour to find the body of Gene Hackman within the house.

95-year-old actor Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa, aged 65, were tragically found deceased in their Santa Fe residence on February 27, 2025. By the time authorities located their bodies, Arakawa displayed signs of advanced decomposition and a stage of mummification.

At the crime scene, a Santa Fe investigator observed that Arakawa displayed signs of facial bloating and mummification in her extremities, specifically her hands and feet. Upon discovery, she was found on her right side within the bathroom, with a black portable heater positioned close to her head.
