As a gaming enthusiast who’s seen more game launches than I care to count, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia with the announcement of Borderlands 4. The rollercoaster ride that is the Borderlands franchise has been a constant in my gaming life for over a decade now. From the moment I first stumbled upon Pandora, I was hooked – the cel-shaded graphics, the puerile humor, and the relentless pursuit of loot were all too enticing to resist.
Initially, Gearbox may have anticipated a more victorious reveal for the Borderlands feature film adaptation. However, it turned out to receive poor reviews and minimal box office earnings. On a positive note, player numbers for 2019’s Borderlands 3 surged on Steam during its release week. Let’s hope that enthusiasm for the series carries over with the news of Borderlands 4 in development. Here’s a glimpse at the intriguing teaser trailer.
The teaser, which premiered at Gamescom 2024, came with the equally teasery description:
In the upcoming chapter of our acclaimed loot-shooting game, you’ll take on the character of a legendary Vault Explorer. Your mission: fight off legions of foes while discovering fresh riches across a brand-new celestial body.
To put it simply, it’s like diving into a game reminiscent of “Borderlands.” Although the trailer gives off a rather somber vibe, this series is renowned for its juvenile humor, which perfectly complements its distinctive cel-shaded art style. The most recent main installment garnered respectable reviews and has sold more than 18 million copies. However, the two spin-offs from this year, “Tiny Tina’s Wonderland” and “New Tales from the Borderlands,” didn’t quite measure up to expectations.
There’s no set launch date for Borderlands 4 as of now, but if adding games to your wishlist is something you enjoy, you can go ahead and do so on Steam. It might be wise to hold off and check out some real gameplay videos before making a decision.
