As a die-hard Harry Potter fan who has grown up with the magical world created by J.K. Rowling, I must admit that Gary Oldman’s interest in playing Dumbledore in the upcoming HBO revival has me both excited and intrigued. Having made his acting debut as Sirius Black twenty years ago, Oldman brings a unique perspective to the table, having been a part of the Harry Potter universe from its early days.
In simple terms, Gary Oldman, who played a role in the Harry Potter series, feels he’s nearly prepared to portray Dumbledore in the upcoming HBO remake. Twenty years ago, he made his first appearance in the Harry Potter world as Sirius Black in The Prisoner of Azkaban.
During a conversation with IndieWire at the Emmy Awards on September 15th, the star of Slow Horses expressed that although no one has reached out to him about the series, he doesn’t expect to be asked to reprise his role as Sirius Black from Harry Potter.
Oldman expressed, “Sirius is my favorite. Unfortunately, he didn’t give enough for the story. He came on stage, then disappeared behind the curtain. I think we can expect an entirely fresh group of actors in the future. Perhaps in a few years, I could play Dumbledore.
Initially gained fame on the big screen in 2001, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and Daniel Radcliffe (age 35) became well-known primarily through a widely acclaimed movie series.
In the role, a 66-year-old actor fits perfectly. Interestingly, when the first Harry Potter film premiered, Richard Harris, initially cast as Dumbledore, was 71 years old. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 72 the following year. Michael Gambon stepped into the role at the age of 64, taking it over in The Prisoner of Azkaban when the film was released.
Earlier in the current month, it was disclosed that HBO is holding auditions for young talents to portray characters like Harry, Ron, and Hermione, as well as other key roles, in their upcoming TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s popular magical books about wizards.
Last year, it was announced that the TV version, set to air on HBO Max, aims to accurately portray the beloved Harry Potter book series, with J.K. Rowling serving as both the author and executive producer.
It seems like the Harry Potter TV series’ filming is set to begin in the spring of 2025. Therefore, it would be wise for HBO and Oldman to make contact right away.
In the initial Harry Potter movie series (from 2001 to 2011), Michael Caine took on the role of Sirius Black, a character significant as Harry Potter’s godfather. More recently, Caine garnered acclaim for his performance in the Apple TV+ series Slow Horses.
Casey Bloys, both Chairman and CEO of HBO Max Content, expressed optimism about the upcoming project, indicating a planned run of ten consecutive years. Contrary to initial speculations, this duration seems to surpass the seven-season span that might have been inferred from J.K. Rowling’s seven books.
