As a dedicated gamer and a die-hard fan of Minecraft since its alpha days, hearing about the upcoming film has sent me into a frenzy! The cast announcement was like a dream come true, and now, with director Jared Hess sharing insights, it’s like being a fly on the wall during pre-production.

The very first Minecraft film is currently under development! With the reveal of a high-profile cast featuring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge on the video game’s official account, the enthusiasm from gamers has reached an all-time high.

Currently, director Jared Hess is spilling intriguing details about the upcoming film. During an interview with ComicBook, Hess hinted at the development of Momoa’s character. According to Hess, Garrett was a legendary video game champion from the late 80s, however, he’s remained stuck in his childish ways and hasn’t grown up since then. Interestingly, despite being an expert gamer, Garrett appears to be unfamiliar with Minecraft.

In my perspective, I find myself rooted in yesteryears, showing signs of being stagnant in personal growth. I cling to past achievements… To clarify, Garrett, who portrays ‘Garrett The Garbage Man’ Garrison in the movie, is one of the quartet of underdogs. Amidst wrestling with daily challenges, he gets whisked away into the Minecraft universe. Hess, the director, made this statement about him.

Upon reaching the game realm, these unconventional characters find themselves in peculiar situations as they fend off adversaries such as pigmen and zombies. But their luck improves following an interaction with skilled artisan Steve (portrayed by Jack Black), who guides them on a journey back home. In summary, the villainous Ender Dragon embarks on a destructive course, triggering a brave young girl and her band of unexpected explorers to embark on a mission to rescue the Overworld. This is according to the official description.

While each of the four characters significantly contributes to the storyline, Momoa’s character stands out as a key avenue for deeper exploration. To those acquainted with Minecraft, his character, Garrett, acts as a mentor, facilitating a more comprehensive understanding of the Minecraft universe for viewers.

A Minecraft Movie by Warner Bros. Pictures will be released in theaters on April 4, 2025.
