It’s with sadness that we announce the passing of Masayuki Kato, the visionary founder of Nihon Falcom, at the age of 78. Kato played a pivotal role in molding the Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG) genre, leaving an indelible mark on its development. Through his guidance, Nihon Falcom produced games that served as inspirations for countless developers and players worldwide.
1981 saw the birth of the company that Kato established, which has since earned renown for its captivating series such as Ys and The Legend of Heroes. Far from mere entertainment, these games pioneered narrative structure, music, and gameplay elements that became benchmarks for numerous other studios to emulate. Kato’s innovative vision and unwavering dedication played a pivotal role in cultivating a devoted fanbase in Japan, eventually expanding their reach globally.
In the 1980s, when video games were in their infancy and many people didn’t see their full potential, Kato had a different vision. He thought games could convey profound, captivating narratives. His company brought this idea to life by producing games that blended thrilling action with well-developed characters and plots. This was an era when most games focused on basic mechanics.
Under Kato’s leadership, Nihon Falcom gained notoriety not only for its captivating gameplay but also for its exceptional music. In fact, the Ys series under his guidance became widely recognized for its outstanding soundtracks that continue to echo in the hearts of gamers even today. To Kato, music was not a secondary concern; it was an integral component of the gaming experience itself.
Back in 2001, I bid adieu to Nihon Falcom, a studio that I had the honor to be part of. Yet, my mark is still evident there, as it continues to resonate through timeless masterpieces like the Trail series and fresh installments of Ys. These games, cherished by fans all around the globe, serve as testament to the enduring impact of the ideas I sowed early in my career.
