I’ve always felt like video games struggle to show everyday life – you know, the little things – as well as movies or TV. And honestly, seeing Black families just being a family, like sitting down to eat together, is even rarer. Those scenes are so important because they make the characters feel real and give you a peek into their lives beyond the main story. Developers sometimes use them to make you care more about what happens, or just to give you a break from all the action. I’ve been looking into games that actually do show these moments, and I’ve found some surprisingly great examples of Black families sharing meals – here are a few that really stood out!
‘Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ (2020)

The Nochebuena dinner is often celebrated for how realistically it portrays an Afro-Puerto Rican Christmas celebration. We see Miles with his mother, Rio, and their friends enjoying a traditional meal with dishes like pasteles and pernil. The scene beautifully captures the cozy atmosphere of the Morales home, and hints at the sadness Miles feels missing his father, Jefferson Davis. It really lets players experience the strong family connections and lively community spirit of Harlem.
‘The Walking Dead’ (2012)

Lee and Clementine are welcomed to the St. John farm for dinner, and at first, it feels like a stroke of luck. The scene leans into the idea of classic Southern hospitality and the comfort of a warm meal, which is rare after the apocalypse. However, a sense of unease grows as Lee tries to make polite conversation while sensing something is deeply wrong. What should be a safe and comforting family dinner becomes a source of psychological horror.
‘NBA 2K16’ (2015)

The ‘Livin’ Da Dream’ MyCareer mode, directed by Spike Lee, uses a lot of cinematic storytelling. It focuses on the protagonist, Freq, and his family, with powerful scenes around the dinner table that show the challenges of becoming famous. Conversations during these meals are often a mix of encouragement and arguments, as Freq tries to stay true to his background. These scenes feel less like a typical sports game and more like a play, offering a realistic and intimate portrayal of a Black family dealing with success and its pressures.
‘Mafia III’ (2016)

The game begins by showing the close relationship between Lincoln Clay and his father figure, Sammy Robinson, at Sammy’s Bar. The bar is the center of the Black mob’s activities and a gathering place for family, offering food and drinks. This initial scene, with Lincoln cooking gumbo and telling stories, creates a strong feeling of community and belonging, which later motivates his pursuit of revenge. It establishes the bar as more than just a business – it’s the heart of the Hollow neighborhood.
‘Detroit: Become Human’ (2018)

Rose Chapman offers shelter to androids on the run at her farm near the Canadian border. A dinner scene shows Rose sharing a meal with these androids as her son, Adam, observes with doubt. This peaceful moment echoes the historical role of Black women in creating safe spaces for those in need. Sharing a meal together makes the androids seem more human and emphasizes the story’s central theme of understanding and compassion.
‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ (2004)

The Johnson family house on Grove Street is where a lot of important planning happens, usually around the kitchen counter. Although the game’s graphics aren’t modern, the conversations between CJ and his brother Sweet are memorable, often focusing on loyalty and what’s happening in their community. The famous scene at Cluckin’ Bell is also a highlight – it’s funny, but also shows a realistic portrayal of friends hanging out and grabbing a quick bite. These scenes help make the game’s wild action feel real and connect it to the culture of 1990s Los Angeles.
‘FIFA 17’ (2016)

I really got sucked into the story mode, ‘The Journey’. You play as Alex Hunter, and it starts with getting to know his family – his mom, Catherine, and his grandpa, Jim – in London. There are a bunch of scenes just hanging out with them, like breakfast and dinner, and it’s cool because it shows you why he’s so determined to make it in the Premier League. The conversations feel really real, and you learn about his family’s history and the pressure he feels to live up to their expectations. It’s those little moments that really make you connect with the character.
‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ (2023)

Insomniac Games excels at creating relatable characters, and they continue to do so with heartfelt moments featuring Miles Morales’ family. A dinner scene beautifully captures the challenges and tenderness of blending families as Miles gets to know his mother Rio’s new partner. With his girlfriend Hailey and best friend Ganke present, the scene highlights the strong network of support Miles is building. The details of the meal and table setting subtly show Miles growing up and becoming more comfortable with change in his life.
‘NBA 2K17’ (2016)

The story centers around Pres and Justice Young, a pair known as Orange Juice, and their growing bond. We see them connecting with their families in heartfelt scenes, often centered around meals. These moments build a believable friendship that translates to their teamwork. A key theme is the vital role of strong support systems for young Black athletes as they begin their professional careers.
‘The Walking Dead: Michonne’ (2016)

This miniseries really gets into my head as Michonne, showing how much losing my daughters messed me up. I keep having these flashbacks – like I’m actually sitting down to breakfast or dinner with them again. It’s crazy because those happy moments are so different from the nightmare I’m living now, surrounded by zombies. Seeing that contrast just makes their loss feel so real, and it totally explains why I’m so closed off and careful with who I trust in the present.
‘Grand Theft Auto V’ (2013)

Okay, so in Grand Theft Auto, I’m stuck living with my Aunt Denise, and let me tell you, family dinners are rough. It’s never a peaceful meal, it’s more like a war of subtle digs and attitude. It’s kinda funny, but also really hits home because it shows how different our generations are. She’s really into this whole new feminist thing and likes to make a point of it, and I just try to avoid drama and eat my food. It’s a pretty sarcastic look at family life, but honestly, it feels super real when you’ve got relatives who just get on your nerves.
‘Apex Legends’ (2019)

The cinematic short ‘Gridiron’ shows us how Bangalore and her brother, Jackson, grew up, focusing on a stressful Thanksgiving dinner. They have a fierce argument about their time in the military. The scene realistically portrays how family gatherings can bring old conflicts to the surface. This look into their past helps us understand the Legends as people and explains the complicated, competitive relationship between the siblings that affects their behavior in the game.
‘Watch Dogs 2’ (2016)

Marcus Holloway discovers a close-knit family within DedSec, a group of hackers who work from a basement hideout. They often come together in their unique space to share food and drinks while plotting their next move. A memorable barbecue scene shows the team relaxing and enjoying each other’s company, highlighting the idea that family isn’t always about blood, but about the values we share and the moments we share over a meal.
‘Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus’ (2017)

Grace Walker, a leader of the resistance, operates from a captured German U-boat while also deeply caring for her child. The game frequently shows her balancing motherhood with her fight against the Nazis – whether she’s feeding her baby in the mess hall or planning strategy in her private space. These intimate moments emphasize what’s at risk in the war and highlight her refusal to abandon her role as a mother even while fighting for freedom.
‘FIFA 18’ (2017)

The follow-up to ‘The Journey’ finds Alex Hunter going to the United States and reconnecting with his father, whom he hasn’t seen in years. A key scene happens in a classic American diner, where Alex and his father try to rebuild their relationship. The uncomfortable atmosphere during their meal shows how much time has passed and how hard it is for them to connect. This realistic moment delves into the emotional impact of a father who wasn’t present, all within the context of a sports story.
‘Madden NFL 21’ (2020)

In ‘Face of the Franchise’ mode, you create your own football player and guide them through high school and college. The game includes flashbacks showing your player’s family life, which explains why they’re so determined to make it to the NFL. These scenes of home life help you remember who you’re playing for and the community you represent while on the field.
‘NBA 2K24’ (2023)

The MyCareer mode now features Family Flashbacks, allowing players to play through the careers of their character’s father and grandfather. These flashbacks usually begin with conversations about family history, emphasizing how the sport has changed over time and the traditions passed down through generations. It’s a way to honor the history of Black athletes by telling their stories through a personal, family perspective.
‘Saints Row’ (2022)

This new version of the game centers around four roommates who are like a close family. Eli, a resourceful and organized character, often takes care of the household, including meals. Early scenes show them bonding over everyday activities like eating breakfast or dinner, emphasizing their strong connection before they become involved in crime. The game really highlights how these friends rely on each other as their only family, and their shared meals are a safe and comforting space for them.
‘Assassin’s Creed Origins’ (2017)

Bayek’s actions are fueled by his deep love for his family, especially after the heartbreaking loss of his son, Khemu. The game frequently shows flashbacks of happy times – Bayek teaching Khemu, or enjoying peaceful moments with his wife, Aya. These scenes, though set in ancient Egypt, feel relatable to anyone who understands the bonds of a close-knit family. The contrast between these joyful memories and the tragedy that unfolds makes the loss even more impactful.
‘Half-Life: Alyx’ (2020)

The game begins with a peaceful scene: Alyx Vance and her father, Eli, are relaxing on a balcony, sharing a drink and chatting. This quiet moment highlights the close bond and comfortable relationship they have. They talk about their work and the world around them, showing they’ve faced challenges together for a long time. It’s a rare, calm moment that makes the science fiction story feel more personal and relatable.
