As a gamer, I love those moments when a character just levels up – you know, unlocks some crazy new power or completely transforms! It’s so satisfying after you’ve spent hours getting good at the game’s combat or finally reaching the big finale. I’ve been checking out some games lately that feature Black characters who get these awesome transformations, gaining incredible powers and totally changing how they look and fight. It’s really cool to see!
‘Prototype 2’ (2012)

Activision published this action game set in a sprawling open world, developed by Radical Entertainment. The game follows James Heller, who has a unique genetic makeup allowing him to merge with the Blacklight virus. As he evolves, Heller becomes a powerful, virus-fueled being determined to defend his family, even if it means destroying everything around him. He ultimately gains incredible abilities, including tough biological armor and huge blade arms capable of obliterating tanks and helicopters. This transformation makes him the most dangerous creature in a city overrun by infection and disorder.
‘Bayonetta’ (2009)

PlatinumGames created this action-packed game, and Sega published it. Throughout most of the game, Rodin seems like a peaceful shopkeeper who crafts weapons for the main character. However, players who buy the Platinum Ticket can unlock a secret battle against him, revealing his powerful true form: the Infinite One. This demonic version is incredibly strong and fast, making him one of the most formidable opponents in the game and a true test of a player’s abilities.
‘Guilty Gear -Strive-‘ (2021)

I’m a huge fan of this fighting game – it’s seriously fast-paced and looks incredible! One of my favorite characters is Nagoriyuki, this vampire samurai. He’s really unique because he intentionally holds back in fights, using a big blade but limiting his power to control his thirst. But he has this awesome ‘Blood Rage’ mode where he takes off his mask and just goes wild, becoming unbelievably strong! It’s risky though, because it drains his health. When he transforms, his attacks become super powerful and have crazy range – he can really wipe the floor with opponents quickly. It’s a really high-risk, high-reward playstyle that I love, because you have to be accurate and aggressive to pull it off!
‘Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4’ (2016)

This fighting game was created by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Killer Bee is a powerful, unpredictable ninja who is host to the Eight-Tailed beast, Gyuki. During fights, he can transform into Gyuki – a huge, ox-like octopus – to overpower opponents with his size and energy attacks. This transformation, known as Tailed Beast Mode, lets him dominate the battlefield and withstand attacks that would defeat other ninjas. His unique connection with Gyuki makes him one of the very few perfect hosts in the series’ story.
‘SoulCalibur III’ (2005)

The fighting game was created by Project Soul and published by Namco for home consoles. One of its characters, Zasalamel, is an immortal man trying to break free from endless rebirth. He seeks the cursed sword, Soul Edge, and ultimately transforms into the terrifying final boss, Abyss. This monstrous form gives him powerful, chaotic attacks and a frightening skeletal appearance. Abyss fights with a scythe, possessing incredible range and strength that can overwhelm even the best players.
‘Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3’ (2007)

Spike created this fighting game, and Atari and Bandai Namco released it in various parts of the world. One of the characters, Uub, is the reborn form of the villain Majin Buu and has incredible hidden power, potentially matching the strongest warriors. He can combine with the benevolent Good Buu to become Majuub, permanently increasing his speed and energy attacks. This fusion unlocks his full power, letting him battle even gods and super saiyans. The transformation blends human fighting skills with the magical abilities of the Majin people.
‘Forspoken’ (2023)

Luminous Productions created the action RPG, and Square Enix published it. The game follows Frey Holland, who learns she’s a powerful Tanta with the ability to wield four different kinds of elemental magic that control the world of Athia. As she grows stronger, Frey unlocks her full potential, transforming into an awakened form that makes her incredibly fast and boosts her magical abilities. In this powerful state, she can move freely across the land and unleash devastating magic against the creatures corrupting it. The game charts Frey’s transformation from an ordinary New Yorker into a master of magic.
‘Crackdown’ (2007)

This Xbox 360 game, developed by Realtime Worlds and published by Microsoft Game Studios, is a sandbox shooter where you play as a super-powered enforcer. You’re sent to Pacify City to take down three criminal groups. As you play, you collect items and gain experience to improve your character’s abilities and change their appearance. Eventually, you’ll transform into a massive, incredibly strong hero capable of amazing feats like leaping over buildings and lifting cars. At this peak level, you become a powerful force for justice, taking down criminals with sheer strength.
‘Shadow Man’ (1999)

This dark adventure game was created by Acclaim Studios Teesside and published by Acclaim Entertainment. Players take on the role of Mike LeRoi, a guardian who walks between the world of the living and the dangerous realm of Deadside. Using the Mask of Shadows, Mike harnesses voodoo magic, allowing him to change his appearance and move unseen through the spirit world. This transformation lets him communicate with lost souls and use enchanted weapons against powerful, immortal foes. His ability to control the dead makes him a formidable hunter, tasked with stopping five dangerous serial killers.
‘Bleach: Soul Resurrección’ (2011)

This action game is based on a well-known anime and was created by Racjin, then published in Western countries by NIS America. A key villain is Kaname Tosen, who gave up his role as a soul reaper to gain the powers of a hollow. He can transform into a powerful, insect-like demon called Grillar Grillo, gaining multiple eyes and arms. This transformation dramatically increases his strength and speed, allowing him to easily defeat his former comrades. It represents his complete break from his past and his acceptance of immense, monstrous power.
‘League of Legends’ (2009)

Riot Games created and continues to expand the popular online game, League of Legends, with a large and growing list of characters. The newest addition, K’Sante, is a powerful tank character originating from the desert city of Nazumah. He fights with massive blunt weapons called ntofos. His ultimate move, All Out, makes him break his protective weapons, revealing hidden blades and changing his fighting style. This transformation weakens his defenses and health, but greatly increases his damage and movement speed for a short time, turning him from a protector into a dangerous fighter capable of quickly taking down key opponents.
‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ (2023)

This superhero game, a sequel developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony, puts players in the role of Miles Morales. He’s protecting a city from both symbiote and hunter threats while also dealing with his everyday life. As he progresses, Miles unlocks the Evolved Suit, which showcases the full potential of his bioelectric powers and solidifies his identity as Spider-Man. This powerful suit lets him release huge bursts of blue energy, quickly defeating large numbers of enemies. It’s a symbol of Miles stepping out of his mentor’s shadow and truly controlling his incredible abilities.
