As a lifestyle expert with a deep-rooted passion for the intricate tapestry of Game of Thrones and its rich history, I find myself captivated by the resilience and tenacity of House Stark. Their journey from rulers of the North to loyal vassals, and finally to regaining their independence, is a testament to their unwavering spirit and determination.
Throughout the storyline of Game of Thrones, the members of House Stark remained fiercely loyal to their rulers, even going as far as sacrificing their own lives for this allegiance. However, it wasn’t until the end of season 8 that Sansa was declared Queen of the North and Bran was chosen as King of the Seven Kingdoms, providing House Stark with a measure of autonomy they had never before experienced.
10,000 years prior to the Game of Thrones timeline, the North and South of the Wall were separated. The Woodland Creatures inhabited Westeros, and the initial inhabitants known as the First Men encountered them. But after the First Men cut down the sacred and revered weirwood trees to boost their new deities’ influence, a significant conflict erupted, resulting in the North’s division.
In my expertise as a lifestyle guide, let me share a historical perspective that sheds light on the enduring legacy of the Straks. For an astonishing eight millennia, they held dominion over the frozen Northlands, a testament to their unyielding spirit and battle-hardened resolve. Winterfell, their ancestral seat, bore witness to countless skirmishes, as the Straks tirelessly defended their territory against relentless foes.

It didn’t take much time before one of the most influential families in the Kingdom was forced to submit to Aegon, the conqueror. As Aegon flew with his wives Visenya and Rhaenys to subdue the southern lands, the fear instilled by their dragons resulted in unconditional surrender. Torrhen Stark knelt before 30,000 armed Northerners, disarming them and pledging allegiance to the Targaryen kings.
It was initially assumed that House Stark made their decision based on their primary duty of guarding their people. On the other hand, as portrayed by House of The Dragon, they held out hope that Aegon the Conqueror would unite the realm to combat threats like the White Walkers and creatures beyond the Wall.
For two centuries, the Starks remained faithful to the Targaryens and later Robert Baratheon. But following Robert’s demise, when Joffrey ascended the throne, he imprisoned Ned Stark and ordered his execution. This act ignited a strong desire for liberation within the Starks.
Robb, the eldest son of Ned, nurtured a desire for total independence among the Northerners. He rallied his troops to the Trident and formed alliances with the Freys and Tullys; the Northerners proclaimed him their king. Regrettably, Robb’s popularity waned after he broke his promise to the Freys by not marrying one of their daughters, which ultimately resulted in the tragic event known as the Red Wedding.
In the years following a heartbreaking incident, and as the story of Game of Thrones progressed, Daenerys Targaryen ultimately journeyed south accompanied by her dragons and troops. At this juncture, Jon Snow, the King Beyond the Wall, pledged allegiance to Daenerys, the Dragon Queen, mirroring the loyalty shown by his forebear. However, Daenerys’ demise resulted in no ruler left to serve, thus granting the north their independence for the first time in many years!
