In early 2026, the live-action Tomb Raider series by Amazon is set to begin filming, with Sophie Turner cast as Lara Croft. Turner, known for her portrayal of Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones, will step into the shoes of the popular video game character, as reported by Variety.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Chad Hodge have been announced as the co-producers for this upcoming project, which was initially given approval in 2024. Previously, Turner had been connected to the series last year, but the tie wasn’t officially confirmed then. Now, it has been confirmed that Waller-Bridge is the primary scriptwriter, while Jonathan van Tulleken will take on the directorial role. Tulleken is known for directing the initial episodes of the 2024 hit show Shogun and four episodes from the second season of Top Boy in 2013.
It’s not every day that we get to create a production of such grand proportions featuring a character you’ve long admired. Everyone involved in the project shares an intense enthusiasm for Lara, mirroring her audaciousness, courage, and humor. So, dust off your artifacts because Croft is set to arrive!” (Phyllis Waller-Bridge speaking to Variety)
Turner expressed immense joy and excitement upon landing the role, stating, “This character is truly iconic and holds such deep meaning for countless individuals, and I’m pouring my entire heart into it.
Previously, Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander have played Lara Croft on screen; now, it’s Emma Turner who takes up the role, becoming the third actress to don the heels of the wealthy heiress in television productions.
