Earlier this month, Funcom, the developer of Dune: Awakening, announced it was restructuring, but didn’t say how many people would be impacted. Now, David Goldfarb, founder of The Outsiders, has revealed that his studio, along with Funcom Stockholm, has been affected by these cost-cutting measures and resulting layoffs.
According to Goldfarb, the team behind Metal Hellsinger is shutting down. He explained that the studio faced near closure after their previous game was canceled, but they were able to regroup and create Metal Hellsinger.
I was really hoping they’d top what they did last time, honestly. It’s just one of those things – things don’t always work out the way you plan, you know?
Goldfarb stated the team wouldn’t quit and is exploring options to continue operating in a different way.
In 2021, Funcom—which was itself acquired by Tencent the year before—bought a controlling interest in The Outsiders. The Outsiders then released their distinctive rhythm-based shooter game, Metal Hellsinger, in 2022.
