Full Trailer for THE PENGUIN Showcases Oz’s Search for Power

As a hardcore DC fan and avid gamer with a deep appreciation for gritty crime dramas, I can’t contain my excitement for “The Penguin,” the upcoming HBO Max series set in Matt Reeves’ dark and twisted Gotham City. Having grown up watching Batman comics and movies, I’ve always been drawn to the seedy underbelly of Gotham and its criminal masterminds, with Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin being one of my all-time favorites.

Among the uncertain fates of DC properties and projects following WB and Discovery’s merger and DC Studios’ universe reboot, I was most hopeful that Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” would carry on. This gritty film about Gotham City had already produced a sequel and a spin-off series in development. Fortunately, neither project was canceled, and the spin-off series, titled “The Penguin,” is almost ready to premiere. In this storyline, Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobblepot struggles for control in Gotham’s criminal realm. Expect clashes between gangsters and henchmen as power plays unfold.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024’s Hall H panel, Farrell unveiled the complete trailer for “The Penguin” through a prerecorded video. The trailer offers a glimpse into the brutal gang conflicts in Gotham. In the power vacuum left by Carmine Falcone’s demise, Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin) attempts to dominate the city’s drug trade and seize control of the Falcone family. However, Sofia Falcone, Falcone’s daughter, emerges from Arkham Asylum with a fierce determination to claim her inheritance and assert her own authority. Her supposed rehabilitation pales in comparison to her past actions.

In the storyline, Sofia is referred to as “the Hangman” at certain instances. Although it’s unclear what this title signifies within the context of the series, in DC Comics, the Hangman is a recognized role. Sofia was introduced in “The Long Halloween,” authored by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. By the time of the sequel series “Dark Victory,” Sofia adopts the identity of this killer, targeting individuals linked to her father’s demise. Consequently, we now have a better understanding of the situation!

Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark label their Gotham City storyline as “The Batman Crime Saga,” separate from other DC universes. Besides Farrell, the cast includes Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Michael Zegan as Alberto Falcone, Michael Kelly as Johnny Vitti, and an intimidating Clancy Brown portraying Salvatore Maroni.

The Penguin premieres September 19.
