FromSoftware had one big problem turning an old Dark Souls 3 boss into an Elden Ring Nightreign boss, and apparently it solved it by yeeting him into the sky

As an avid admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about Zulie the Witch’s recent revelation concerning Elden Ring’s Nightreign boss battle. It seems that she has spotted an intriguing discrepancy, one that was initially hidden by a cutscene, and suggested a modification to make the fight even more engaging!

In Nightreign, FromSoftware demonstrates their exceptional talent for repurposing assets, showcasing a variety of bosses from earlier games. Some of these have been altered to fit the new game, as the original mechanics might not be suitable for Nightreign. As Zullie the Witch points out, this adaptation is essential when transferring them from one title to another.

Zullie points out a minor adaptation to the Nameless King in Dark Souls 3, enhancing his battle for this multiplayer encounter. In this game, during the initial stage of combat, he rides on a Stormdrake, mirroring Ornstein and Smough from Dark Souls 1, as he later dismounts and takes in its spirit.

In Dark Souls 3, developers can replace the Nameless King model with a smaller version (approximately 35% smaller) during cutscenes, according to Zullie. But in Nightreign, there are no cutscenes, so how does FromSoftware manage this change without it being noticeable? One possibility is that they adjust the camera angles and perspectives to hide the size difference, or perhaps they use a different model for certain stages of the battle where the smaller size wouldn’t be as apparent.

Now in Nightreign, he ascends rapidly, only to return slightly diminished in size compared to his original form. This transformation might go unnoticed amidst the turmoil of battle. Zullie mentions that he vanishes approximately 105 meters above, near the entrances of the Spirit Shelter, and what descends is the smaller version of himself.

I love how much smoke and mirrors there are in video games. They’re all an absolute miracle.
