During his time on Friends, Schwimmer had actually agreed to a three-film deal with Miramax during the filming of The Pallbearer.

However, there was a condition: “I was given the opportunity to direct my debut film.” Excitedly, Schwimmer prepared to direct his first film with Chicago’s Lookingglass Theater Company.

Despite the allure of playing a role in Men in Black, Schwimmer stated that the timing wasn’t ideal. His vacation from Friends was short, and he had previously agreed to direct a movie for his theater group.

Schwimmer stated that they commenced preparatory phase, detailing how his fellow theater troupe members had abandoned their respective positions to contribute to this endeavor. All arrangements were in place, encompassing the budget, team, and timeline.

It was then that the offer for Men in Black arrived. Schwimmer found it tough because accepting the role would have meant leaving behind his friends and theater project. He explained that during the summers of Friends, he had a four-month break. During this hiatus, Men in Black was set to be filmed, which coincided with when he was planning to direct a movie through his company.
