As a lifestyle expert who appreciates the journeys and transformations of talented artists like Freya Allan, I must say that her recent venture into the world of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is nothing short of extraordinary. After immersing herself in the enchanting yet perilous realm of The Witcher for three seasons, it’s fascinating to see her embrace a more grounded character but find herself transported to an even more astonishing universe.
Following three thrilling seasons immersed in the perilous realm of The Witcher, Freya Allan was eager to explore a more down-to-earth character. Her next venture led her into an equally captivating universe, however. In conversation from EW’s video studio at Comic-Con 2024, Allan shared insights about departing Netflix’s enigmatic series for the post-apocalyptic terrain of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Freya Allan shared about the time following her departure from The Witcher, revealing the high anticipation surrounding her future plans. In essence, she expressed that she desired an ordinary experience, such as sitting down with others for casual conversation at a table.
Instead, destiny guided her to Australia, where she found herself in a turbulent setting. Allan recollected his arrival as entering what seemed like a prison with individuals displaying peculiar behavior. She was greeted by an overly excited actor named Owen Teague. At first, she anticipated a traditional part, but soon discovered herself in a predicament where her yearning for normality was swapped for a circumstance where humans behaved unpredictably, almost like chimpanzees. Looking back on her initial expectations, she admitted that she had longed for the ordinary, yet found herself in a production where humans acted more like chimpanzees.

In the fourth movie of the modern Planet of the Apes series, which started in 2011 and is titled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Freya Allan takes on the role of Mae, the primary human character. Alongside Noa (played by Owen Teague) and Raka (portrayed by Peter Macon), Mae joins the simian heroes in their quest to regain control of their tribe from Proximus Caesar, played by Kevin Durand. Unlike her fellow cast members who wore motion-capture suits to depict apes, Allan is among the actors portraying humans.
At first, Allan felt relieved to portray a human character, as she found the roles of apes to be laughably absurd. She remember thinking, “It’s good I’m human; they look silly!” But her interest piqued, and she expressed a wish to try being an ape herself. “I would have enjoyed playing an extra ape someday,” she noted.
Allan looks forward to the possibility of Mae’s character developing further, especially if she reappears in a new story. Initially, Mae harbors strong hostility towards apes, but undergoes major changes during her time with Noa. Allan is anxious to watch how Mae deals with her past and encounters the people who have been part of her life since its beginning, given that she has gone through such a profound and transformative experience.
Allan ponders on the potential clashes ahead, as Mae introduces a fresh viewpoint to her community, which he believes might not be warmly received.
Freya Allan’s talent for shifting between the magical worlds of The Witcher and the post-apocalyptic environments of The Planet of the Apes’ Kingdom showcases her adaptability as an actress. Originally, she aimed for a more everyday role, but fate offered her another intriguing opportunity, underscoring her willingness to take on varied characters and captivating stories with enthusiasm.
