Freddie Prinze, Jr. Answers Big Questions About Ray in I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER

This summer, the chilling suspense of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is set to return with a dose of gory slasher action. In this sequel, fan-favorites Ray Bronson and Julie James, portrayed by Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt respectively, make their comeback. Following numerous hints and sneak peeks, we’ve finally got a trailer for “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and it delivers exactly what we anticipated. The film appears to follow the style of this year’s “Scream”, with Julie and Ray reprising their roles as original survivors who strive to protect the latest group of unfortunate victims from meeting a grisly end. Recently, Prinze Jr. and the new movie’s director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson shared some intriguing insights about the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film with Entertainment Weekly.

Julie and Ray’s “Deaths” in the Previous Film Are “Outside Canon”

It seems puzzling to some viewers how Julie and Ray could have survived after the events depicted in the final scene of “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”. In that scene, it appears the killer is pulling Julie under a bed while Ray is in the bathroom. I’ve always thought this was a terrifying sequence designed to scare the audience one last time. However, the new film is a direct sequel to “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”, and the third movie in the franchise can be considered a standalone sequel. Consequently, the events of the third film don’t count, according to Robinson, who offers a slightly different interpretation of that final scene.

She told EW, “I’ve handled the franchise by considering the climactic scenes in the initial two movies as not part of the main storyline because in the first movie, she’s attacked through the shower, and in the second, she’s pulled under the bed. Therefore, they’re both still alive and healthy. However, I can assure you that our film continues the established tradition.

Ray Is A Struggling Bar Owner in His Hometown and Apparently Not With Julie Anymore

Initially, it was believed that Julie James and Ray Bronson would marry following the incidents depicted in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. However, it appears that if they did indeed tie the knot, they are no longer a couple as they reside in different cities. Currently, Ray is in their hometown of Southport, NC, as shown in the trailer. Interestingly, one of the new characters seems to be seeking Julie’s help, hinting at a possible past connection between them. A behind-the-scenes photo suggests that Julie is now living in Raleigh, NC and still uses her last name James. It remains unclear if they are both single or not, but there might be potential for a rekindled relationship. Furthermore, it’s plausible that one of the new characters could be their daughter.

Although Julie appears to be thriving, Ray, who runs a bar, is struggling quite a bit. He’s fighting to keep his head above water, which isn’t the lifestyle he envisioned for himself. As time passes, he seems older, grouchier, and not particularly good at dealing with his emotions – much as one might anticipate.

Prinze, Jr. stated that he deeply cherishes his hometown, unlike many others, and has become somewhat crankier due to how he feels the world has mistreated him following the Southport Massacre in 1997. It seems to me that he’s experienced a lot, and I’m not sure if he’s handled it in the same way modern men do. He’s very much a ’90s guy like myself, so I believe he may have internalized more of the emotions we discussed.

We Will Learn Karla’s Fate in This I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel

There’s ongoing curiosity among fans regarding Brandy’s character, Karla, who managed to live through the second movie. As for Brandy reappearing in the sequel, it remains unclear at this point. However, Robinson hinted that we will discover Karla’s fate in the upcoming film.

In my own words, I can share that we discover the fate of her character without giving away any secrets. Being an ardent follower of this series, I approached this role with great enthusiasm for the franchise. That’s about all I can tell you.

I Know What You Did Last Summer hits theaters on July 18.
