Empire magazine recently shared a new photo from Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming film, *Frankenstein*, and offered new details about the Creature’s appearance, according to director Guillermo del Toro and star Jacob Elordi.
A Monster With Humanity
Guillermo del Toro is famous for creating monsters with surprisingly human qualities, a trend evident in films like *Hellboy* and *The Shape of Water*. He continues this approach with his new take on *Frankenstein*. In an interview with *Empire*, actor Jacob Elordi explained del Toro’s vision for the film.
As a film lover, I was just blown away by the makeup in this movie. It wasn’t about covering things up or creating a perfect facade – it actually highlighted the character’s humanity, and in a way that was surprisingly gorgeous. It felt incredibly real, but also visually stunning.
Elordi explained that putting on the prosthetics each day went beyond simply getting ready for work; it helped him fully become the character.
During our first conversation, Guillermo explained that the transformation wasn’t about applying cosmetics or a long, drawn-out procedure. He described it as a transition – a moment to become the creature. I found that idea incredibly powerful and took it to heart.

Del Toro’s Personal Connection
Guillermo del Toro sees *Frankenstein* as something special – not just another retelling of Mary Shelley’s famous story. He explained that the tale has a personal connection to his own experiences.
As someone who absolutely loves movies, I’ve always felt that filmmaking demands everything from you – it’s incredibly consuming. It really took a toll on my personal life, and I wanted to explore that in this film. It’s a deeply personal story about family, and about looking at yourself from two sides – as a father and as a son. Honestly, I see a lot of myself in both Victor and the Creature. I think we all have those dualities within us.
The Release
The cast of *Frankenstein* includes Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Jacob Elordi, and Felix Kammerer, with supporting roles played by David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz.
The film opens in select theaters on October 17 before streaming on Netflix beginning November 7.
