It’s no surprise that reimagining *Frankenstein* in 1930s Chicago results in a tough, action-packed story filled with guns and gangsters – even classic monsters reflect the era they’re set in. The recently released synopsis for *The Bride* gives us more insight into the mayhem shown in the trailer, revealing that it shares:
Maggie Gyllenhaal, the Academy Award-nominated director of *The Lost Daughter*, brings you *The Bride*, a fresh and daring reimagining of a classic story. Christian Bale stars as a solitary Frankenstein who journeys to 1930s Chicago, seeking the help of brilliant scientist Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening, a five-time Oscar nominee) to create a partner for him. They succeed in bringing a young woman back to life, and The Bride (Jessie Buckley, also an Academy Award nominee) is born. But the results are far more shocking than they expected, leading to murder, obsession, a surprising new cultural movement, and a passionate, forbidden love affair.
The new trailer for *The Bride* presents a Frankenstein and his bride as a couple reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde, which is… unexpected. While not necessarily bad, it’s a very different vibe from the classic Universal Monster films, which typically used gothic castles and isolated settings to enhance the romantic and eerie atmosphere. Instead, we see Frankenstein wandering the bustling streets of 1930s Chicago, sporting a fedora. It’s a bold choice, and perhaps exactly what some fans have been hoping for! Ultimately, we need to see more of the film before forming a final opinion.
The film *The Bride* boasts a fantastic cast, showcased in the trailer. Alongside Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, the movie stars Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, and Academy Award winner Penélope Cruz. Maggie Gyllenhaal wrote and directed the film.
The movie *The Bride* will be shown in North American theaters starting March 6, 2026, and in international theaters beginning March 4, 2026.
